9-11, hypocrisy, exploitation, and media silence

I would like to see numbers on those effected. Most government workers I know have healthcare provided to them so why do we need this huge bill?

Well, remember, dems have been in control of all the committees, so they've had control over bill authorship and what ultimately gets to the floor for consideration. Republicans then can only offer amendments. There may well be a republican proposal out there that never got to the floor. Next year this will change.

I'd say push the first responders thing off a few weeks and see what comes out of the House as a replacement.

This had nothing to do with amendments. 42 Republicans signed a pledge to filibuster any legislation until they got the tax cuts for the wealthy approved. If anyone had objections and/or wanted amendments, they could have offered to work through the holidays, just like first responders do if they are needed. Pathetic. Why Reid felt it necessary to push it through a lame duck session is also pathetic.

The fact is there were tens of thousands of people who came from all over the Country to work at Ground Zero who were told the air quality was safe; lied to by the EPA, who many believe, was put pressure on by Bush to keep a lid on it. There was no official monitoring or even enough supplies for workers to wear respirators to protect their lungs. There were Verizon and Gas and Electric employees who all also worked down at Ground Zero who are now laid off. Approximately 40% of the workers, according to a survey done in 2006 had no health insurance; that figure I am sure, is much higher now with the economy. New York City also has recently laid off many firefighters, police force, teachers, and state employees due to a serious budget deficit. There were two schools locally of which now students are presenting with cancers, not to mention the whole area blanketed in the dust so badly that residents had to dispose of their furnishings.

This legislation was written to provide health care to all the people and their families that may be affected for the rest of their lives, but also, as a fund to pay lawsuits for those that missed the deadline in the past/ and or worked after the first 96 hour period of which were not allowed to file in the first lawsuit.

But none of them could give a rat's toot about these people, just that rich folk can keep getting their tax cuts or that the off shore corporations who do business here and support them politically, do not have pay more in taxes to help fund the program. Playing politricks with people's lives and then having the gall to say that if they work through the holidays, it would be disrespectful. God forbid their holiday trees catch fire, would they like to hear from the fire department that they can't come because it's the Christmas season and it's disrespectful to work? Here is a list of all the Republicans who voted Nay.

It's all politricks at it's best with people lives who wouldn't think twice about running into a building to help them. If you're a praying person, pray for politicians and their pathetic souls. I, personally, hope they all choke on their "piggy pie.

Fox is finally taking a stand on this, after Jon Stewart shamed them into it.

In ?Daily Show? Role on 9/11 Bill, Echoes of Murrow

?Success always has a thousand fathers,? the mayor(Bloomberg) said in an e-mail. ?But Jon shining such a big, bright spotlight on Washington?s potentially tragic failure to put aside differences and get this done for America was, without a doubt, one of the biggest factors that led to the final agreement.?

But comedy on television, more than journalism on television, may be the most effective outlet for stirring debate and effecting change in public policy, Mr. Thompson (a professor of television at Syracuse University) said. ?Comedy has the potential to have an important role in framing the way we think about civic life,? he said.

?I have to think about how many kids are watching Jon Stewart right now and dreaming of growing up and doing what Jon Stewart does,? Mr. Thompson said. ?Just like kids two generations ago watched Murrow or Cronkite and dreamed of doing that. Some of these ambitious appetites and callings that have brought people into journalism in the past may now manifest themselves in these other arenas, like comedy.?

Yes, for all that Stewart and Colbert are dismissed as "comedy", the caliber of their guests, what they cover, their credibility level, and their actions put them FAR above most other TV news shows.
