Smiling JOe

Today is the day of mourning from only a few years ago. The events of that day, Sept 11, 2001, stole my heart for a long time, and today is still a little difficult to get through, even at the beach. I would like to give a big hug to those of you who have been touched by the events of that day four short years ago. I remember it all too clearly. There is melancholy in my rememberence of that day.

Me too Smilin' JOe. All day was thinking about the tragic day 9/11 represents. Even in the wake of the Katrina gulfcoast disaster, the date of 9/11 still hits me hard and makes me remember exactly what I was doing when I heard about the initial WTC crash. Still surreal and I went to the site a few years ago and just stood there in disbelief. Very painful memory.

I just watched the Flight 93 documentary on The Discovery Channel (it is being replayed right now if anyone is interested). I cried nearly the whole way through. More than anything, it brought back the emotions I felt on 9-11-2001. I didn't personally know anyone who died in the attacks, but I, like most Americans, grieved with those who did lose a loved one. My children, who were then 5, 4, and 2, are now 9, 8, and 6 (+ baby) and they are old enough to ask questions and TRY to understand the insanity of 9-11. The thing they most want to know is WHY and I don't really know what to tell them.

Yes, it's one of two memories in my life that literally hurts when I think of it. They said at the time that the world would never be the same, and turns out they were right. I'm still grieving for NOLA, it made it hard to relive 9/11 today too.

My husband and I were walking on the beach morning of 9/11/2001. Two dolphins came so close to shore it seemed as we could just reach out and touch them. They were so beautiful!! We walked back home talking about how exciting and unusual. We had never seen them that close. The t.v. was on and we were still talking about the dolphins as we watch in horror the unfolding of 9/11. So many people lost their loves, so much sorrow, so much destruction. Our hearts hurt, still. We are so thankful we have the memories of the dolphins.

I watched the memorial ceremony on TV this morning and was amazed and quite honestly satisfied that I remembered so many of the names the brothers and sisters of the victims were reading from the list. God Bless them all.

I had just left my son's elementary school and turned up the radio a few minutes later just as the first reports were coming in. I drove on home because it wasn't clear what exactly was happening-there seemed to be a lot of confusion. I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter too. My best friend came over to watch the TV coverage. She had lived in NYC for 8 years and had recently moved back to Louisville. She was frantically trying to call her friends on her cell phone. We sat on my couch for hours crying. At some point in there I picked up my son at school.

I went to NYC last spring on a school trip with my son. I had not been to NYC since 9/11 and I wasn't sure what to expect. Driving into the city from Jersey and seeing the big hole where the Trade Center buildings had been was like being punched in the gut. The site itself looks mostly like a construction site, but across the street is that little miracle church-Trinity I think it is. It is an amazing little oasis in the middle of NYC anyway with its old trees and cemetary, and even more amazing is its story of how it didn't get destroyed by falling debris- apparently saved by a large tree, which did not survive, but it's spot is marked with sign. This church has opened up to the public and houses a small memorial display that had all of us weeping the entire time we were inside. On display were notes, letters, pictures, flowers, etc. that had been left at the site. One table was "please find my...." display- pictures and written pleas and descriptions from people looking for loved ones. The desperation felt by these people jumped off the letters and notes. Beautiful banners sent from all over the country voicing support and love for the victims and their loved ones. I'm sure many of you have been to the site, but if you haven't, it has to be on a NYC itinerary.

The flight 93 documentary on the discovery channel was very sad to watch. My kids and I sat through the whole thing, they are very interested in the events of that day but it was sobering to put a face and a family with all those victims. god bless them all
