Do you know anything about Robert Byrd? His is a story of change and redemption who deeply regretted his racist past. He apologized for his intolerant past and declared he had been wrong. He opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act but was the first to vote in favor of 1968 Civil Rights Act. He continued to make amends during the rest of his long distinguished career. He senate speech against the invasion and war in Iraq should be required reading in school and congress.

As far as Robert Byrd is concerned yes, he was in the KKK, but repeatedly apologized for it spent the remainder of his career working for equal justice. Because of Byrd’s evolution on race and equality, the NAACP issued a statement praising him at the time of his death.
