Amendment 4

Have you all heard about Amendment 4 coming up for vote in November? It is an important issue about smoking and our kids. You might want to check it out. :D

I think every Floridian should have a CO2 fire extinguisher provided to them and be encouraged to freely blast the face of the dimwitted parent smoking around their kids. It would probably be cheaper than paying for the revolving door of ER visits for 'asthma exacerbations'.:bang:

What an excellent idea....::clap_1: It wouldn't hurt my feelings.

I dunno.
Sometimes I wonder how much influence we as parents actually have.
My parents smoked like chimneys around me. Neither my brothers nor I smoke.
(And yes, my youngest brother has occasional respiratory difficulties which we attribute to being the youngest and the one in the house the longest when our parents did their 3 pack a day thing.)
And I thought I had indoctrinated by *own* kids against smoking. I do not care for the tobacco habit at all.
But my older son smokes. It's more a club thing, he knows better than to smoke in our house, let alone in front of me. But we know he smokes.

Must be the French influence. And perhaps the oral fixations in his genes.
He tells me it's a phase and that he'll quit. My parents tried to quit three times. They both died young.
Not sure what message I am trying to impart here.
I think this amendment is worth voting for: I think that no matter how much we think we are impervious to advertisement, it does effect us.
And parents: don't be too sure that your role modeling will influence your child. Ours did in terms of instilling morals and values, art and literature, and nutritious diet--but not in terms of one of my *biggest* pet peeves! ;-)

I don't care if adults want to fry their lungs and tool around Wal-Mart in their golden years hooked-up to oxygen. My pet peeve is adults who fumigate kid's airways, and the kids really don't have a say in the matter. So, the little ones tend to have more lingering upper airway infections, reactive airway disease, ear infections and STINK like ashtrays. That just isn't right:pissed:

Yes. Agree. Maybe education is the answer? Or maybe it would not do any good? Not sure, but I would try to educate.
I remember that my brother was working up the nerve to ask our mom to *not* smoke in the house when she visited his newborn daughter. But then it became a moot point when Mom died of a heart attack. :(

Smoking with kids in the car that can't speak up for themselves has always been a peeve of mine. :nono1:
The one thing about this amendment is the teenagers that started the TRUTH ads will once again get the money to advertise to other teens. The peer pressure thing is really a tough thing for these teens to overcome.

My cousin is currently dying of lung cancer. He just turned 50 in July. He has a wife and two sons - that all smoke and a brand new grandchild. His father died of lung cancer in January - his mother also smokes. It must be powerful addiction for people living with the disease not to be able to give it up - we need to stop the kids from smoking.

I hope this passes and helps the kids.
