As inexplicable as it seems, you may have contributed an interesting insight. I have always been fascinated by the fact that a great many masterpieces in all sorts of art, are intriguing primarily because they are disturbing. They transport us to an uncomfortable place. Dark Side of the Moon, Guernica, Salvidor Dali. Any comments?
I'm sure that the movie is disturbing on many levels, but it sounds a bit sanitized. It's a tragedy because the hero is murdered at the end. Personally I think even if he had lived, his life was tragic simply because of his need to use deception in order to promote himself. That makes a good story because on the one hand he is no doubt an incredibly gifted fighting machine who I am sure saved a lot of American lives. On the other hand he has major character flaws that hinder his ability to function in civilian life. He's [was] also a multimillionaire. As an observer there's a lot of moral conflict going on and it forces me to think. Some will only see what they want to see, and that is their option. My favorite athlete is Babe Ruth. He was an amazing athlete with a colorful personality who helped children and was simply larger than life. His behavior was also appalling on so many levels. He may have even murdered his first wife. Now that's a story.
