Andy your right:: Public beach renourishment forum

New posts
Personally, I am appalled at the lack of understanding of what Brad Pickle and others have put forth regarding this project since it started in approximately 2006. All of you out there who do not live on the beach, do not expect an answer from the anti renourishment clan. They feel they have the BCC by the tail because of the concerted efforts of a few. Most of those who have any inkling of the disasterous effects of a hurricane or, in the case of Dennis, a tropical storm, understand the need for completion of this project. I'd be willing to bet that 70% of these "private beach rights" people have never seen a tropical storrm or hurricane. We haven't had one since 2005. The argument regarding sand and loss of private property are both fallacious. We were told about where the sand would come from years ago, out of the gulf by the way, and that it would meet the county ordinance. As far as the loss of "property rights" is concerned, all expansion will be South of the MHWL which is already public land. One more thing. My HOA has never been notified of the efforts of this group nor asked their opinion of its efforts. I feel sure the same is true of Adagio, White Cliffs, Bella Vita and Blue Mountain Villas, all located in the area most eroded and badly in need of restoration. What we have here, is a bunch of elitest people who ignore what a marine expert, totally versed in this field, tells them. I never heard the word "easements" until recently. Let the Corp of Engineers decide what needs to be done and get on with it. Also, those interested in public use of the beach, petition the Florida Supreme Court to make all beaches in Florida public land just like California's. For those who think they are losing something, also bear this in mind. You can't build on it, you can't plant crops on it and you can only sit on it. Does your butt take up so much room no one else can use the area, especially past the HMWL which isn't your land anyway.

Let me say at the start, I am still in favor of beach renouishment. However, I am not in favor of a berm being built down the middle of the beach. Sand was successfully added in the Western end beach renourishment, evidently without the berm down the middle. I admit I am not well informed on this aspect of the restoration. What I do know is that something needs to be done to extend the beach at Blue Mountain. Otherwise, we will not lose property rights, we will lose the property itself. If the Corp of Engineers cannot come up with a plan that merely extends the beach seaward of the HMWL, then the project should be discarded. That said, something still has to be done for severly eroded areas such as Blue Mountain beach, or the next major storm may leave no beach at all.
