Annual Beach Cleanup - 7/5/08

Yuk- to quote Rapunzel, "I now hate fireworks". Organized fireworks shows are one thing, but the general public shooting off fireworks, and leaving behind all the debris (and they all make a mess) is another.

Biggest mess makers? Bottle rockets, mortar pieces, and sparklers (yes, people left metal sparklers sticking up in the sand). It appears many fireworks are now made with plastic components, which ended up as sharp sticks. Food, like corn cobs. Bottles and cans.

Bdarg noticed a lot of dead crabs in the Western Lake outflow- and lots of M80 debris.:bang:

We watched the fireworks at the Van Ness Butler access. A family showed up next to us and shot their bottle rockets out over the water, and of course I told them to stop- don't want any projectiles shot off by fools around my family. Plus, I doubt these idiots were going to swim out and pick up the bottle rocket sticks.

Thanks to the SWCC for organizing this event- we got a t-shirt, but we would have done it anyway to clean up our "backyard", since we spend more time at the beach than in our own yard!

Was the idiot the one who decided - twice - that fireworks are better seen at eye level than in the air?

I saw that!!!!!

No, my idiot's stuff didn't leave the ground, except when the wind hit it.

I was lucky to meet Ash and Mrs. Ash this morning while cleaning up the Ed Walline area. Those nice folks actually do this every morning while they walk the beach. Kudos to them for helping to keep a little piece of paradise clean. We were actually heartened to see that some folks picked up after themselves last night (or perhaps early beachwalkers). There was a good bit of fireworks debris at the garbage cans. I see what ya'll mean, though, about the crap left on the beach overnight. There were tents, and chairs and all kinds of things our there.

Thanks Miss Critter. It was very nice to meet you. Very kind of you to allow your family to sleep in while you were out getting lotsa exercise. Amazing what walking a couple miles and bending over a couple hundred times will do to the muscles.

Especially to those "muscles" that you didn't even know you had!
