TOKYO ? Toyota is recalling 1.53 million Lexus, Avalon and other models, mostly in the U.S. and Japan, for brake fluid and fuel pump problems, the latest in a string of quality lapses for the world's No. 1 automaker.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday that it will call back for repairs about 740,000 cars in the U.S. and 599,000 in Japan. The remainder are in Europe and other markets around the world. Honda Motor Co. also said it would recall an undetermined number of vehicles because of the same issue.

Over the past year, Toyota has recalled more than 10 million cars and trucks worldwide for a variety of problems, from faulty gas pedals and floor mats that can trap accelerators, to braking problems in its Prius hybrid. In August, Toyota recalled 1.33 million Corolla sedans and Matrix hatchbacks in the U.S. and Canada because their engines may stall.

The majority of vehicles this time around need to be fixed for a problem with the brake master cylinder which could lead to weaker braking power, said spokesman Paul Nolasco in Tokyo. Some models in Japan and elsewhere ? but not in North America ? have an electrical problem with the fuel pump which could cause the engine to stall, he said.

Something has clearly gone wrong at Toyota.

i view the mass recall, as something going right with Toyota. they are correcting their mistakes. no one has ever expanded their market share as did toyota in the past ten years. their ceo said several years ago that qc was their biggest challenge given the numbers. Toyota makes superior cars/trucks. I'd buy a camry any day, and you may take the dodge sebring. Ten years from now, that camry will still be busting bugs down the highway, and the sebring will be a lawn ornament.

..and the money we both spent will be sitting in bank accounts geo located directly across from each other. I'll sleep better night knowing which side of the globe my money is sitting on even if it means my "hood ornament" has to be replaced more often than yours.

Based on your normal posts that statement makes no sense since the government bailed out GM with money borrowed from a country that is only about 750 miles from Japan.

I haven't purchased a car since then. My options are getting limited! :D I drove a Ford truck when I was younger, maybe I'll try that again.

Toyota secretly bought back from U.S. consumers vehicles it found with speed-control defects as part of a strategy to hide unintended-acceleration problems from safety regulators and the public, a revised lawsuit claims.

The repurchase transactions included strict confidentiality agreements barring consumers from disclosing the problem to anyone and from suing the automaker, according to the amended class-action complaint.

The new complaint also cites internal company records documenting instances in which Toyota Motor Corp technicians or service managers replicated speed-control problems like those reported by customers.

And it says the company's confirmation of at least one clear-cut case of sudden unintended acceleration was concealed rather than reported to federal auto safety regulators.

Cover up!

I have a 2008 Avalon and it is a great car. I don't think Toyotas are any less reliable than any other american made brands out there. I have talked to several owners of Toyotas since all of the recalls, and they do not regret buying one. I have more problems with the service departments at the Toyota dealerships where I live than I do my car. They don't even know how to balance or rotate a tire! I am wondering how many other makes and models of cars are having problems that aren't being reported.
