Anyone celebrating secession?

New posts
The ruling class wants to keep on ruling. No matter who they have to stand on to do it. I think it's more about preserving a way of life and continuing to do things "the way it's always been done". If you grow up in that system you would probably fight to keep it that way along with your family and neighbors. The moral compass spins and spins after generations of owning slaves. We'd all like to think differently and that we would be better than that. Maybe we would.

Human nature is what we're stuck with: Our American Founding Fathers--notably Geo Washington & Thomas Jefferson--owned slaves. Jefferson wrote eloquently about liberty, justice & that "all men are created equal." Yet...he owned slaves!

In these more enlightened times, we'd like to think if we'd lived back then, we could have done the right thing...but few of us would or could.

The truly courageous is he/she who recognizes injustice & speaks truth to power & actually does the right thing At The Moment.

Neither Slavery nor Secession was the right thing in 1860.

It should be obvious that celebrating secession is not the right thing to do in 2010.

Lincoln towers above Jefferson/Washington

Just finished a VERY interesting book - focused on a racial incident in 1970s North Carolina, but includes a lot of history bits from Secession to now - and roundly criticizes how sanitized the textbook/commonly accepted version has become (and not just in the South BTW).

One funny bit was that the Sons of Confederate Veterans keeps decorating his ancestor's grave and claiming him as one of their own - but he was so actively against the war they tried to hang him for his subversive actions. He was finally conscripted and served a few months before ending up in a northern prison camp - where he claimed he gained weight because conditions there were better than living in his home during the war.
