Anyone know a local VW mechanic?

Bought a 99 VW. Need a good mechanic to point me in the right direction. Prefer not to go to the dealers if I can help it.

Not even sure if it's still there, but there was a Euro mechanic over in St. Andrews that did great work.

Der Meister I think?

Thanks TJMay, I'll check Monday. EDIT: Isn't Jeff Osborne a custom builder? I just need transmission work.

Carson, first I have to fix reverse. ;-)

Any local shade tree mechanics anyone knows? I'm not sure it will make it to PC in it's present condition.

Good idea on the trailer. That's how I brought it here from Jacksonville. I have to find someone to fix it first. Der Meister apparently isn't there anymore. I may just look for a trans shop that is well regarded. It drives, but reverse is FUBAR.

It would be almost impossible to diagnosis a transmission problem through posts on an Internet forum, especially without a description of the problem.

But, It's possible that the only problem with reverse is a failure of the shift lock plate that is designed to keep from hitting reverse accidentally. This 5.00 item is easily replaced and if the transmission is not really FUBAR, might just fix the problem!

My apologies for the confusion. I'm not trying to diagnose the issue, I know what it is. The transmission in question is the VW 020 manual transmission used for more than 20 years. Reverse is notorious for going out in them. I've seen all the videos on YouTube and know the procedures, I'm just not confident enough to do it myself.

Henry's on Front Beach in PCB. Does work on all foreign cars. Always took mine there and was satisfied.
