Artists plus taxi equal a fun ride

When Paradise Taxi owner Dave Doherty let it be known on the community Web site, SoWal, that one of his cars needed painting, he didn?t expect the overwhelming response he received.
Since artists are always looking for anything standing still they can paint, artists up and down County Road 30A were standing in line for a spot to adorn with the flourish of their individual brushes.
Fourteen artists participated in transforming the plain Checker Cab to the rainbow ride everyone wants to take.
?Several different cabs pull up at Baytowne and the kids all run to mine,? Doherty said proudly.
Every inch of the cab?s exterior is adorned with someone?s work of art, as well as parts of the interior.
The project began last fall and Doherty held a ?coming out? party for the newly painted taxi March 14 at The Red Bar. Most of the artists that worked on it attended and met each other and viewed the completed work for the first time.
Some of the artwork has a story behind it, such as Allison Kraft?s rendering of a blonde in a red kayak paddling with pink paddles.
?It?s a running joke on the SoWal site about ?Mermaid?s? pink paddles,? explained Kraft.
Billie Gaffrey?s take on an old-time Checker Cab look in her work is a tribute to her father-in-law, who used to drive a cab in New York City. This is Gaffrey?s fifth car to paint. ?It?s a lot of work,? she said.
Doherty believes the car?s artistic look will appeal to potential riders and be good exposure for the artists. He plans to take it to ArtsQuest in May and is currently taking reservations for the most unique ride on 30A and beyond.
The 30A Art Taxi was built in the 1980s, said Doherty, although it has the retro look of the 1950s. He started his Paradise Taxi service in January of 2006 and now has nine cabs, with five on the road. The 30A Art Taxi is the only one of its kind he has, but he said he has another good candidate.

30A Art Taxi?s artists:
? Allison Craft, a former art teacher living in Seagrove, worked on the project with her 12-year-old daughter, Hannah. Allison did the trunk hood and back bumper and Hannah did the front bumper.
? Blue Mountain Beach artist Billie Gaffrey leant her funky style to the passenger front door.
? Andrew Lo Bue put his signature ?golf balls in space? on the driver?s front fender.
? Grayton Beach duo Eddie and Sally Powell of eddieandsallygallery did the rear fender and door. Throwing back to the Dogs of Grayton, Eddie painted his dog?s picture in front of a view of Western Lake. Sally did her signature hat ladies.
? Kim Pall of Blue Mountain did the roof, rear driver?s side door and runner.
? New Orleans transplant Kristina Shamel did the hood.
? Molly Peterson did the dash.
? Freeport?s Kris Meigs did a mosaic on the passenger front door.
? Karen Griffiths did a tropical mural on the front right.
? Grayton?s Debbie Weant-Lane adorned the driver?s back door with her signature hula girl.
? Phillipa Norton and her friend Lauren Beeker of Indiana (both high school seniors) did fish on the grill and the taxi sign on top.
