Average tax burden at 40 year low

New posts
He left it out because the Republicans did away with it. Remember the "DEATH TAX!" sounds ominous doesn't it? Well it applied to Estates in excess of 1 million dollars and it no longer exists.

Such a silly tax. It costs the feds more in enforcement than the revenue generated through the tax! It's taxation for sake of taxing! It serves no purpose.

You pay more in state taxes than you do federal taxes? I think if you total up your federal income tax, FICA and medicare, your percentage of the corporate tax on products you buy, the gas tax, etc.. Florida taxes might look a little better.

I meant to say the amounts have gone up locally for everything for me. All my local taxes have gone up this last year, federal taxes are lower for me this year.

I am not at all surprised that we are all paying more taxes than usual locally. Municipalities have had difficulties over the past five years or so and when they run into trouble, they raise taxes regardless of which party has control. City of Atlanta has been Democratically controlled for a few decades and your eyes would pop out of your heads if you saw what I pay in taxes.

Really, my taxes have gone down the last few years. If you have seen yours increase here, I would like to know why. First when Amendment 1 passed I thought that was the State infringing on local governments ability to operate by telling them they were limited, with a one size fits all rule. At the same time, the State increases fees to operate because of loss of tax revenue and then reduces the amount they send back to local governments, ie, the School Boards, Clerk Of Courts. I will assure you the Tax Collectors will take a hit by taking over the Driver's Licence from the State in a few years after all the local offices are closed, then they can just mandate to them they have to do it.

Not that I live in Atlanta, but I would venture to guess the increases seen in the City are due to people moving to the burbs and the cost of doing business. Local government should be handled at the Local level.

I've seen some fee increases on a few things, but the "big one", my property tax, has declined four years in a row, by 55% total. Although I don't believe this had anything to do with legislation, it's probably just declining home values.

Is it that taxes are lower, or that we got some stimulus benefits, and so many had a sucky year that we were in a different income bracket.

Property values are declining so be prepared for millage rate increases.

You're right, 30ashopper. Property taxes in FL are set legislatively based upon home value as of Jan 1st each year. Mills can vary, obviously. But, since home values have dropped dramatically, that is the reason property taxes have declined in FL.

FF2, in the City of Atlanta, there hasn't been a flight from the City Limits. Over the last decade, there has been an influx of people moving into the City. Our taxes have increased in the last couple of years due to the declining economy, increase costs of services (yet police and firefighters have been furloughed) and a decrease in property tax collection ratios (collected:values assessed). Just like Walton Co., there was a huge increase in property values 2004-2007 and budgets were determined by these proposed values, which were obviously inflated. More than 50% of our tax base goes to the public school system, which I am huge proponent of; however, more teacher/school admin lay offs have already been announced.

In other words, municipalities are upside down with their respective communities and those left paying the bills are those who CAN pay them. It's a mess.

Due the decrease in value and non payers you can expect higher milliage (sp?) rates.
