St. Joe's Shares Look Overpriced - Barrons.com

"The shake-up last week at St. Joe, which gave control of the big, controversial Florida landowner to investor Bruce Berkowitz of Fairholme Funds, does nothing to solve the company's basic problems: a weak real-estate market in the Florida Panhandle?known to boosters as the Emerald Coast, to the less charitable as the Redneck Riviera."

On a serious note I understand that valuing land 15 miles from the Gulf of Mexico as some sort of future resort is ridiculous. Just look at the land value in Walton County as you head north. That's not meant as a slight at Freeport or Defuniak, but land values speak for themselves.

On the other hand those that dis JOE seem to conveniently drop assets that JOE retains. Just in South Walton they own a one of a kind boutique hotel and quite a bit of commercial space.

Most of the naysayers seem to be looking at this stock as some sort of legacy stock as though any day someone will be famous as a reality star and we'll have to suffer through the antics of a JOE trust fund baby. According to my broker Intel is a buy, but who's to say that silicon based chips aren't going to become the next eight track?

I guess the point is that much like housing stocks may or may not be right for each individual, but if it serves it's purpose during ownership then it's a good fit.

Buzz, is this your recommendation still? At least you're consistent, JOE's gone up 25% in a couple months time, but you still don't like it. Anything you do like? Do you like INTEL? I hate INTEL, I think they're screwed actually, as computing moves to the cloud, and so the device at the edge of the cloud doesn't need a processor, certainly not an expensive one.

Do you know that hedge fund manager David Einhorn, who is short JOE stock, has a couple key contacts at Barrons and her sister companies? Where do you think this particular story's idea germinated?

:floor:

Cloud computing currently is exactly what it's name implies. Large structures mostly made up of gas and moisture. Don't discount computers just yet. The first cloud hosting company to have a large crash, and it will happen, and you'll see a surge in stand alone computer purchases.

In other words:

Cloud = don't believe the hype.

I own JOE and INTEL as part of my large cap US allocation.

The best way to own either is thru a index fund or a passively managed fund from DFA.

JOE has woefully underperformed SPY for decades.

No,no,no-the best way to own stocks is broad market index funds or passively managed funds from DFA.

Owning individual stocks is a fool's errand.

While Joe is up the last couple of months, it has historically and consistently underperformed the S&P.

So I do own JOE...as part of our allocation to the broad US market.

I was unfamiliar with the term cloud computing, but after reading about it, it sounds like it's just an abstaction for extreme networking and MULTI-processing. Have you been smoking cloud matter? Please enlighten me.

There has been a lot of press lately over St. Joe?s (JOE),a Florida-based real estate development company. Two prominent investors have taken opposite sides of the stock. Leading the short case is hedgefund manager David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital, who contends that the JOE?s land in Florida is no more valuable than cheap rural or timber lands. The chief bull is Bruce Berkowitz of the Fairholme Fund, who believes that the land can be developed into much more valuable real estate. With super investors on either side, other investors are left with a dilemma.
