Chat Holly Needs to be repaved

New posts
Remember this post office?

That was on 393, right?

The first one I remember personally was the little block building on 98, between what is now the Chevron and Ace Hardware. And I also remember Lillian Rooks, who ran it by herself!

It will always be Cano Square! Same as 83 being dump road.

Ahhhh...the dump! I learned to drive in a 1963 Ford Army jeep on all the papermill roads through the woods. One of my duties after my dad realized he could push stuff off on me was to make the weekly or bi-weekly trips to the dump using the back roads. I can still get around back there.

The crazy thing is that my GPS recognizes some of those roads!

I'm with you on that. The building next to the PO that eventually turned into the hardware store was a restaurant called Clayton's!

Neither Chat Holley nor 30A are made for high speeds; we can agree on that. But why would anyone try to take the law into his own hands and punish drivers who are speeding? That is what you're trying to do, right? Scare some sense into them? Are you trying to prove that you can get them to slow down when a posted sign would not? :idontno:

Whatver the reason is, I hope you think twice about 'drifting' into someone's lane. Just think of the results of a car veering onto the shoulder of 30A and then overcorrecting. There are too many lives at stake to be playing this little game.

Yes this can be dangerous. I understand SWGB's frustration, though.

Mrs. Rooks was a sweet lady, I was friends with her kids. You know you can hydroplane (sandplane) on a dirt road?! The little post office was closed when I was a kid, the school bus used to stop there under the old oak tree, and wait for the next bus to take us somewhere else. Grace White was the bus driver.

The problem with Chat Holley is the easement is not enough on the East end to properly pave the road. The county will have to buy the extra footage to bring it into code. Also, it's not in the right place at the junction of 331, they'll have to move it back over. Chat's probably laughing in his grave. He'd made the county move it over in the first place!

We used to change buses at Millie Boone's house. Later it was 331/98. It may have been the bay fill after that.

Grace White was a GRAYT bus driver. :wub:Seriously. I'm not sure they make them like that anymore.
