Christieends Soviet style broadcasting

If you think these outlets are not influenced by the people giving them millions of dollars you are naive or deluded. What the government funds it eventually controls. But if you are correct in your belief then you have made my point. These outlets can operate and prosper as not for profits and do not need to receive government funds. But regardless of how well they perform or the quality of their programing, it is unfair to provide them tax dollars to compete with private concerns that are paying taxes. Government funds should be spent only on a limited number of activities and funding Big Bird is not one of those activities.
Bottom line, I am not opposed to the activities, I am opposed to the government funding them. I would be equally opposed to the government funding Eddie Eagle shows on TV or the Glen Beck program on radio.

Interesting theory, but reality doesn't back up your words in the slightest bit when it comes to the content of NPR.

I consider myself a liberal.
However, I've got a bit of libertarian mixed in.
I think the gov't should provide a no. of things for all citizens, including education, roads, public safety, basic healthcare, basic legal services, clean environment...
I think the gov't should Not provide religion, art, entertainment, radio, tv...

Should I turn in my ACLU card?

I am not going to get involved in this ridiculous thread except to say this. If you cannot understand this quote from Idlewind, "Bottom line, I am not opposed to the activities, I am opposed to the government funding them.
I would be equally opposed to the government funding Eddie Eagle shows on TV or the Glen Beck program on radio.", then you are one or all of the following. Not intelligent, not open minded or not understanding of the English language. It is not a liberal vs. conservative thing. It is a perception of the proper use of tax dollars. BTW, I agree fully with Idlewind.

Andy, thanks for telling it like it is.

Since you brought up the spector of "1984", I thought you might be concerned that a bald-headed, beady-eyed, multi-millionaire, who calls himself "Governor Rick Scott" has left several messages on my private telephone message machine about what a wonderful job he is doing. Isn't this government propaganda at the taxpayers expense? Just wondering...

I do not like government spending money to tell me how great they are whether it is telephone calls, newsletters, etc, etc. It is propaganda and a waste of money. It is the media's job to report on what government officials are doing and the citizen's job to decide if they are right or wrong. Scott should work on becoming a practicing conservative instead of just talking like one.

First, you say you are against funding of something that is clearly in the the best interest of the citizenry.Does this mean you are against food subsidies, fuel subsidies, roads, highways, bridges, the military? These are all funded by the federal governmnent. Should we let the private sector handle the arm forces? Should we let the oil companies operate without all the subsidies they get? But when it comes to the education of the citizens of this country, you would rather have that handled by profit-oriented news corporations. I find that a bit hypocritical.

Second, you say you don't want NPR to become a propaganda machine. Again, I will ask you, do you ever listen to NPR? If you want to talk about propaganda, I want you to ponder the word "Obamacare". Is this a word that the vast majority of intelligent people on the face of the earth use, and agree with it's meaning, or is this an artificial propaganda term used by one sector of the population, over and over again, to propagate a false premise. Heath care reform was passed by a majority of both houses of Congress, so why isn't it called Congresscare? "Obamacare"? doublespeak? propaganda? you decide...

What does any of this have to do with your BS fear based thread title? There is no Soviet style propaganda machine operating at PBS. Calm down and switch news channels to see you don't have to fear the form of government we enjoy.

Yes it's a ridiculous thread. The title kind of gives it away, doesn't it?

I usually do not put much credence into the title of a thread although sometimes it makes me open it. I am more interested in what is posted in the thread and whether it has any merit. This one doesn't, IMO. Idlewind answered the questions asked of him and supplied his stance. Some do not accept what he has said so they attempt to spin and twist his answers into something he does not mean and is intended to make him look stupid and uneducated. Despite what some who post here may believe, those who post with opposite points of view are not stupid. I speak only for myself but I have had a long work career, received education both in the military and civilian life and have managed to make myself financially secure. I am sure it is also true of Idlewind and 30ashopper, who seem to be the ones left posting here who share my values and point of view. It is my contention that when we attempt to be civil and post our positions we are thwarted at every turn, and, as a rule, nastily at that. Now, before all of you with an opposite point of view start screaming I am whining, let me assure you that if that is your take, I accept it. But be assured I think those who agree with Idlewind are right and those who don't, for the most part, are wrong. (Nothing is ever 100%)
