CNN Poll: Thumbs down to the Ryan Plan...

Looks like all we have to show for the trillions wasted in the last 3 years is another economic downturn.

The last three years are the only years money hsa been wasted?

They are unique in that we now have to figure out how to make good on benefits promised to the arriving retired baby boomers. I think that is what has so many people freaked out.

Silly, why should we worry about 10,000 boomers retiring every day for the next 20 years. It's not like there isn't enough money in all the pension funds and every American hasn't done a great job of saving for retirement.:sarc:

Boomers just need to go back to their hippy roots. They'll be fine.

If you can make that leap in your mind, back in time to when you wore patches on your jeans, your mother shopped with coupons, and your dad washed the family car. If you can remember a time when money was a means and not an end. Then reducing your consumption to retire early will be an easy and joyful journey.

sounds pretty good to me...and what better place to do it than in our piece of paradise...just think: local food, less stuff, more bicycles, smaller cars, healthy cooking, family time together at the beach or bay or lake or creek, fishing, swimming watching a starry sky...reading a library book. What's not to like?

I might find it difficult to give up my Internet, but the television...easy. I was away from the Internet and television for four days last month and it was easy...hiking on an Island with no stores, no trash cans (pack it in, pack it out); ranger stations powered by solar energy...access only by boat. Nice getaway. A modified version of that might not be a bad idea.

Interesting article Lucifer. I have often thought that if times got tough for us, we would know how to make it - because we were extreme conservationists at one time. Gradually we got away from that but still remain less materialistic than most. We have experienced the simple life and know that if we were to return to it, we could be happy because we were quite happy back then also. ..

Unfortunately, I know a few who were never all that sincere about the lifestyle and became very materialistic. They just want everything, they are in deep debt with no savings, in poor health, and there is no way they will be able to retire. Oh and they hate working. I know one and I ask him what he needs all that stuff for and he tells me he never had stuff when he was younger and now it's his time, and his only fault is that he has to have the very best. When he was younger his wealthy parents would send him money any time he needed it so he could bum around and party. I hope he's not typical but I'll bet there are lots like him, which means we're in trouble.

:trainwreck:

It's not just folks like him. People who have appropriately saved/planned for retirement are in the minority. I swear most people think they are going to live large off Social Security or strike it rich.

They need to take unpaid leave from work to see a money shrink who can find the psychological basis for their "illness" which no doubt has its roots in societal pressure. To get "cured" costs about $1000.00. They do have an extended payment plan.

Yep - and they laugh and say winning the lottery will have to be their savings plan.

I have to say it has been more of a challenge to raise a child (not giving them everything) when you can afford it, than it was for my parents who were poor and simply could say there is no money for that. We knew not to even ask and were pleasantly surprised when we did get something extra.

But I can watch our daughter who just finished her first year of college, and see that some frugality definitely rubbed off. We're letting her "make it on her own" this summer so she can see if she can do it. She's in Austin working two good jobs and will take 2 summer classes so she'll be a busy girl. I can almost guarantee that she will put a decent percent of money in savings. We'll see what happens.:idontno:
