That's right. I'm calling it. A perfect storm is brewing itself to make it possible. Here are a few random thoughts to support my belief that we can and will see an independent POTUS and what it is going to take-
For a long time a candidate needed to have a party affiliation in order to be viable. This was because it was near impossible to gain exposure and to raise funds outside of our two party system. I believe technology is at a point where these two factors can be overcome. Howard Dean taught us that a very large amount of money can be raised via the Internet. Barack Obama showed how a campaign could organize the masses using the Internet. And before he showed himself to be a cartoon character, Ross Perot showed us that a successful individual from the private sector can gather interest and support.
The past few elections showed us that the lack of experience can be overcome by the right person, that your VP need only be better than the other candidates', that there is a fast track to the white house and that it is important for people to be able to relate to you as one of them.
Enter Brown. Sure there's an "R" next to his name. But what his win shows us is NOT that people are fed up with the dems and want the repubs back in control. His win shows us that people are fed up with BOTH parties, that the independent vote is strong and that someone who seems bright and articulate and thinks for themselves on an issue by issue basis can be quite popular. Brown's campaign scored huge points when it declared that the senate seat Teddy Kennedy occupied for so long wasn't his- it was the people's.
For a long time, the only animals who stood a chance were an elephant or a donkey. But these are endangered species once we have the right citizens step up. I believe a business leader/visionary with a solid track record for turning things around for a well known company, who lacks a scandalous past, who is polished but able to demonstrate toughness, who is reasonably good looking and charismatic, etc etc etc
Such a person ( and they really do exist- they are just typically smart enough to not want the job) can and will win. And it will happen soon.
PS- they should not run under an existing 3rd party if they are to be taken seriously. They should proudly represent NO political party.
