Concealed weapon permits in Walton County

New posts
Just spent several weeks at UAB Hospital Trauma center waiting room, Bham, as my niece was in a car accident. We were in the waiting room round the clock. You would NOT believe the shooting victims and their families in and out every day, all night long. Most didn't hang out as the victim did not survive. Many did hang out as their family member was barely hanging on. We got to know some of the families and found out about the security in place at the hospital to see their family member, so that the shooter can't return to finish the job. I don't have the numbers but my guess is that there are more gun wounds in that unit than car accidents, motorcycle accidents, crack burns, etc all put together. In the course of one evening, there were at least five new victims, all unrelated, in the trauma unit.

No one cares. It barely makes the news anymore. One old grandmother of a large family in the waiting room told her 12 year old grandson, who was almost fainting after seeing his loved one dead, that he needs to get used to it.

No one cares. I can't imagine. I'm still stunned. I don't even know what to think anymore about guns and violence, which are connected in every way.

Nah, not in big public hospitals with the high level trauma units. The gun violence seen in those facilites is a direct result of failed wars on poverty, failed schools, failed drug policy...basically social woes perpetuated by bad government policy feed the trauma centers. Believe me, I have been there too, with the gore on my hands. If eliminating guns was the answer to inner city violence, Chicago with her tough gun restrictions would have relatively quiet trauma centers. I wonder how many kids got shot in Chicago the last 24 hours?

of course you know what the phrase"down the river" meant....in all it's southern charm and courtesy...the onus will be around at least a century or two.

Funny thing is, I didn't know what the phrase meant, so looked it up on the good old Urban Dictionary. Considering that nobody has been 'sold down the river' in the original sense since the 1860's I'm thinking we can move on. Ironic that contemporary politicians who are lauded as being enlightened continue to sell poor families down the river to this day on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, from sea to shining sea.

No one is talking about eliminating guns, at least I am not. That would be impossible and unrealistic and unnecessary. I know they are ingrained in society at every level and I don't think people want to give up their guns, period. But there has to be an answer to unlawful use of guns, and protecting our kids and families from guns in our daily lives - regardless of what side of town you live in. I don't know the answer. I've only glimpsed the very smallest fraction of the problem.

We were under heavy security at the hospital on the 9th floor where the medical staff was the best I've ever imagined working miracles and using medicine and technology that astounded me - the trauma and burn team is just awesome. We are so impressed by that team of doctors and nurses, I just didn't know how innovative and advanced medicine can be. Add to that the need for security by a city police force round the clock, sometimes by the dozen. All of it combined was a different experience for me.

I realize more than ever that the issue is complex and goes far beyond the gun.

We as a country are crazy stupid about guns.

You don't need a gun 24/7 unless you are a criminal or law enforcement.

I like to shoot them for fun or food, but I have zero desire to be around the typical trigger happy paranoid gun toter in a mall, store, or gathering.

You suspect wrongly. I have served, and I was raised shooting competitively. I have seen my share of stupid mistakes by knuckleheads with loaded guns in their hands, and the idea of several million Barney's out there looking to right all perceived wrongs is truly appalling. Unless you are carrying money, working in a high crime area, or have a compelling need to arm yourself, you are making a grave mistake packing on a daily basis. keep it at home! the lady from illinois can defend herself by having a gun at home. we don't need everyone walking the streets like dodge city in a redneck's wet dream.

Dear Bob- the Illinois lady DID have a gun AT HOME while she was being beaten within an inch of her life at her JOB. Was she to have asked her assailant to please stop beating her long enough to allow her to run home and get her firearm? Using your logic, essentially no one other than the police are sufficiently trained, and therefor no one should be allowed to carry a firearm in public; then why allow someone to have a gun at home for self-defense? And if it is permissible to have a home firearm for self-defense, then why now extend that right to beyond the home? And in fact, in the Illinois ruling mandating a concealed carry law, that is precisely what the presiding judge said. And once again, I pose the question, when was the last time, or the first time, that a so-called barney fife blew away an innocent person at Safeway, Publix, etc. I would argue that an armed citizen or two in the theater in Aurora CO, (10 blocks from my son's home, small world, eh?), may have saved several lives that night.

I personally am much more fearful of the IRS, the DOJ, and the FBI under this administration (and let me apologize to the residents of the other 49 states for foisting Obama, the Chicagon upon the nation) than I am of law abiding citizens who choose to legally carry firearms.

Have a good day.

It is not the guns which are the problem, it is our violent society, as Teresa so vividly and distinctly points out. When we learn to act like civilzed human beings, as do most European countries do as a whole, we will be well on our way to solving many of our very obvious problems. Skunkape pretty well nailed it. Why am I not surprised.

I can see you now, blazing away in the dark at the movie theater...would you drop your popcorn? What do you aim at? Regarding Obama and your worldview, you need to dial back your fear. No one's going to come get you.

the context is as the crops changed with the latitude... from wheat and corn, to tobacco, to cotton, to rice...the further down the Mississippi, the more of a hellish nightmare it became to being a black person and the plantation system that sowed the seeds of today's problems. NOLA was "the end of the line". you can always move on if your ancestors were party to this system of subjugation. if you were on the receiving end...you never forget, you think you can't let go because of the perceived wrong.... see Serbia,Chechniya, northern Ireland. do you think the black poverty started in a vacuum? the incubator was Dixie.

He should be able to relate to not being able to let go. Dixie still holds a grudge over their little servantopia getting upended almost 150 years after the Civil War.

It is not a "worldview", merely an observation of current events in this country. And yes, you are probably right, since I am not a reporter for Fox News, I can at least strike the FBI and the DOJ from the list. That notwithstanding, Obama is the biggest hoax ever thrust upon this country, but hey, give enough stupid people (who vote) free stuff and anyone can be president!

But I digress, once again, how would having a weapon "at home" been able to prevent the savage assault that befell the Illinois lady? And why are you so condescending to those you do not agree with, e.g. "barney fifes"? Do you also regard women who own firearms for personal defense Bonny Fifes? Are they considered by you to be wild-eyed Annie Oklies?

Lastly, I ran across this, another example of a gun saving a solid citizen's bacon. Gotta get back to work now, I want to pay my "fair share" to the emperor!

PS- You aim at muzzle flashes in the dark, and I do not eat popcorn, it is fattening.
