Didn't Michelle look regal?

This is my favorite shot from the night. Sweet!

I think Michelle looks amazing about 60 percent of the time, 20 percent of the time she looks nice and the rest of the time she tries too hard. :D This gown was a grand slam.

I liked the fact that Jindal was there. He and his wife looked very nice.

State dinners are important affairs and this one seemed to go extremely well. I saw Fareed Zakaria interview the Indian PM on Sunday's show and there definitely seemed to be a mutual respect there between him and President Obama. I was happy to hear PM Singh, apparently a wonkish economist type, say that he is firmly behind the dollar as a world standard and has a great deal of confidence in our system as a whole.

Thats a beautiful picture - wow - thanks for sharing

Thats what I love about different people- everyone adds to the mix

[quote=Arkiehawg;628411]So you won't "worry" too much.....the dress was put together in the designer's studio in NY and the embroidery work was done in his father's shop in India. That dress and several others were provided to her by the designer at no cost.

First Lady Mrs. O debuted her ensemble for the state dinner, wearing a gown by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan. The strapless gown features hand cut sterling silver sequins sewn on champagne silk chiffon, which create an abstract floral pattern. The dress was entirely handmade, requiring three weeks of work by 40 people, completed in Naeem Khan's family workshop in India. (IT WAS MADE IN INDIA)

Khan was born in India and grew up "under the watchful eyes of his father and grandfather, both well known throughout India for designing intricate and luxurious clothing worn by the royal families and other social notables."

Mrs. O accessorized her ensemble with oversize drop earrings, featuring a fleur de lis at each ear and tear drop shapes made of gold and purple stones. Mrs. O completed the look with a dramatic stack of gold and diamond bangle bracelets from India on her left arm, a coordinating champagne-colored wrap, and her hair swept into a loose, romantic updo.

Not saying she didn't look beautiful...she did.....but just the idea of 40 folks working three weeks to hand sew a dress IN INDIA for her......

Arkie quote :"Since it was a huge hit, his American based company should receive a healthy boost in revenue....Keeping it in America...."

ARE WE SURE ABOUT THAT "Keeping in America" ARKIE ?

"How many people are we talking about?
About 40 people between embroideries and people who sew the dress and make the corsets. It took more than four weeks to make this dress. All the embroidery is made in my father?s workshop in India?and all the cutting and sewing is done in my studio."

Naeem Khan on Designing Michelle Obama's "Priceless" First State Dinner Dress - Speakeasy - WSJ

To answer your yelling question, Zar.....YES. The above was in an article that interviewed the designer. As stated before, the embroidery work was done in his father's shop and the material was cut and sewn in his studio in NY. His company is based in NY, that provides jobs in AMERICA. The interest in the dress and the beauty of it's design will only increase his business and the stability of the jobs of his staff.

To help reduce noise pollution, perhaps you should push the CAPS LOCK button until the little light goes off.

"And she served a mainly vegetarian meal (some of which was grown/produced in the White House garden) because the Prime Minister of India is a vegetarian."

The cook, Samuelsson, who was born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden and recently became a U.S. citizen, was out in the garden Monday night and Tuesday harvesting pineapple sage and arugula for the salad, oregano and thyme for the vinaigrette, fresh dill to garnish the soup, and thyme and marjoram for the curry paste. In addition, he selected garden herbs to garnish plates and trays of passed appetizers.

Looks like it was the herbs from the Obama garden that were used at the dinner...not those "meaty vegetables" that Vegetarians enjoy.
Arugula in the salad is the main "lettuce" not an herb, and they also used honey from the White house beehives (who knew) as part of the dessert.

Since you were so worried about the cost, I wanted to let you know they were growing some of the ingrediants on site..........and serving more veggies instead of more $$ meat heavy dishes.

P.S. Please be more carfeul quoting me - you clip too much and it ends up showing your comments (which I certainly do NOT agree with) added to my initial post.

What your point is regarding the herbs from the garden is beyond me - as it says a mostly vegetarian meal was made with SOME of the ingredients from the garden. Why start something about such a wonderful thing?

Let's all be thankful today that we are not Romans living during the reign of Tiberius or Caligula! Now THAT was cause for alarm!

And one more point. The dress was designed by an AMERICAN - New York based designer, and it was worked on in India. That mixes the best of both worlds and is a good will gesture in my opinion particularly for this event.
His story: the soiree celebrated the relationship between the U.S. and India, where Khan was born. The grandson of a textile entrepreneur who specializes in elaborate embroidery, Khan moved to the U.S. to attend school when he was 20, but later became an assistant for the iconic minimalist designer Halston, who he met through his father. The rest is fashion history.

?Halston sponsored me. I became an American citizen. And it has been the most amazing life. My most amazing thankful Thanksgiving is this Thanksgiving. It?s an American dream,? said Khan, who got choked up talking about it all. My office has been inundated with people calling. My phones have been inundated with friends and people all over the world?I want to see how this will affect my business.

This was not an inaugural dress and correct me if I am wrong but I believe the dress she wore for that event was designed by someone from Chicago and American made.

For this event it seems very appropriate.

A photo search of the couple demonstrates that he 'outkicked his coverage'.

There goes Vern Switzer's theory:biggrin:

The dress is gorgeous and Mrs. Obama looks nicer than I've ever seen. A big improvement over the James Brown in drag look she usually sports. Bravo, Mrs. Obama.

Stunning.....for the first time in my lifetime I am proud of a First Lady's gown.
