Easy and free web page set up site?

I'd like to learn how to create easy web sites for family stuff (photos, recipes, etc.), advertising the cottage rentals, teaching, etc. Does anyone know of a good free online source for doing so? I want to be able to change the sites whenever I want, so they have to be pretty easy. This would include adding/deleting photos, text, "email me" link, etc. I'm not very tech-savvy and I've proven to be a slow learner in this area, but I'm willing to give this a try. So, the simpler the source, the better.

Thanks, SJ. Is there a "catch" to using geocities to create a webpage (I ask because it's free). I could create one through my workplace (even if it's for personal use I've been told we have so much "space" that this is fine), but I've tried to be taught how to create a web page twice but haven't been able to do it on my own. So, I'm looking for the most simple instructions to begin with.

Paula, IF you're familiar with Word and other "MS Office" products, you might want to play with FrontPage a little..its interface would be familiar to you, and the program is probably already installed on your PC. You just type in your text, changing colors and fonts just like in Word, add your photos, and save. (Pro's don't use it because it writes kloogy code, but you won't ever have to worrry about that for simple pages like you describe.) There are pre-designed templates you can use too, just sub out the sample text. So give it a whirl. You'll be surprised how much you can do right away with it, on your own.

If you need, I can help you upload your site to your account once you've created a page. PM me.

I would also recommend FrontPage. I went from working in a warehouse to building websites for a living. FrontPage is what I learned with and for some odd reason (10 years later) I still use it. I don't use any of the fancy Microsoft functionality that FrontPage offers, but I still use it everyday for page creation and editing.

KB ... an impressively astute observation :clap_1: ... that escapes a remarkably large number of professionals, and a failing shared to a greater or lesser degree by a very many, if not all, WYSIWYG "web page editors".

Paula, KB is right - for a fairly simple set of pages, FrontPage or even late model Word will work fine. You might have to throw away a page (file) and start over here and there, because both tend to compound the screwy code they generate with with even more, and so on, when you change things around, but that shouldn't be much of a problem for simple stuff.

Good luck, and don't be bashful about asking questions... (sounds like KB will keep you straight ;-) )

Thanks, all, for the advice. Sounds like Frontpage it is. I believe I already have that through my office. I just need an extended period of time to hunker down and focus on it! And thanks for the offer of help, Katie Blue!

Paula, I use FrontPage to write my webpages, but it is not free, and it there are no pages uploaded for free associtated with it. Geocities is a free service allowing you to upload several pages of content with no costs. Yahoo owns the company and they make their money off of advertising. They may place a banner ad or a pop up ad on your page, I am uncertain. To see some examples of people's geocities sites, I think you can go to geocities and search for sites. If you are afraid of spam, create a yahoo email trash address and use it so that the email will not go into your real email.

Yes, Joe's right, the advantage of GeoCities is it's already online when you create the page, but the downside is that your page will have advertising on it. That's OK in some cases, but for those who might need a more streamlined site, you'll need to send it up to your webspace yourself once they're created. (almost eveyone has free webspace with their email account these days.) This is what I will help you with Paula, if you don't use GeoC or similiar. But for anyone else reading this, it's easy enough to send files to webspace via a free program such as CoreFTP or WS-FTP LE. (google the names and download the free version.) Just drag and drop the files from your computer to the server. The path/URL for your webspace will be available in your email acct info, with the tech specs.

However, for $5 a month, you can create and host your site on GeoC with no ads. The above paragraph is the "free" way to do it with no ads, assuming you have Frontpage, Word or a free website builder tool (there are many available for download.)
