Farmers Markets or Curb Markets

New posts
A lot of the curb markets I see around sell a lot of the same stuff the grocery stores do. They might have some local stuff in season.

For The Health Of It in BMB gets some excellent organic produce.

The ugly ripe beefsteak maters at Publix are tasty. I paid $7 for 3 medium-size ones the other day. :bang:

Geez! Did you have an armed guard to escort you to the parking lot with your treasure?

Sounds like the real "truck farmers" have been civilized out of business. :bang: :bang: Just like lots of other traditions and places around the SoWal area (and other places too). Civilization and the desire to make lots of money just keep messing up the "good old days".

Regarding good tomatoes...."there's two things that money can't buy; that's true love and home grown tomatoes."

And if you don't think that's true just compare true home grown with any kind of store bought tomato. And, for the "true love", I'm sure I don't have to explain that. :lolabove: Just my 2 cents.....

We love those for making tomato-basil bruschetta. I almost had a heart attack when I saw they were $3.99 a pound at the Seagrove Publix - needed about $10 worth. We brought the leftovers home - no way I was going to waste that bruschetta!

AMEN! :lolabove: Nothing like a good homegrown still warm from the vine. With the juice running down your arm, as you chow down!

Yum, you're right. I love a good ol' 'mater sandwich with salt and pepper, fresh white bread, and mayonnaise.

A new-school approach that we frequently do is slice them, arrange them on a plate, and sprinkle them with Kosher salt, freshly-ground pepper, EVOO, and balsamic vinegar, perhaps topped with shaved Parmesan - great summer lunch.

Padgett Farms in the North County has been known for years for their superior tomatoes. You can get some other good stuff there, too.

If you ever seen Chilton County (AL) peaches, buy as many as you can fit into your car. You won't be sorry.

We had tomatoes, eggplant, broccoli rabe, basil, and pumpkins planted in the garden this morning. The herb garden is already growing strong, mostly self-starters from last year.

Does anyone see broccoli rabe in the stores down there? I could eat it every single day of my life and it's great in pasta dishes, too.

Add some freshly picked basil and I there. Oh heck, I'm there with or without the basil.
I am growing 'maters on my deck this year. I have some Grape, Roma and Big Boys. My Daddy was always partial to Better Boys. They are almost impossible to find though! I have some Grapes that will be ready by the weekend.:clap_1:

Eat Right Produce and Fruit Inlet Beach
I just saw this place advertised in the Walton Sun. Has anyone been there? It's in Summer House Village on 98, Inlet beach. I was hoping we'd get a fruit and vegetable stand in the area.

Posted by Paula, many threads ago.....
I recently met the guy who owns this stand and see him all the time now. He seems like a really cool guy and he grows his own stuff right there on sight. Go see him. The house next to Johnnie Earles has some really good looking maters, too.

Oh, yeah, we always add basil, hand torn.

BTW we always used to stop at the produce market in Freeport at the intersection of 331 and 20 (by Cash's) on the way to the beach. Sorry it's gone.

Enjoy them 'maters!

Donna, I can't buy broccoli rabe where we live, although it's available in Atlanta. One of the best vegetable dishes I've ever had was the broccoli rabe at Houston's in Boston. I haven't seen it on their menu there or anywhere else since then.
