Fire Truck Blocked On Defuniak St

New posts
Yes, throwing a tow truck in the mix would help.

The point is that if you one way the streets the parking could be altered to follow the traffic flow. Without adding to the road you would have what is essentially there already, one lane.

What I'm saying is to one way Defuniak St. south from Lydia Ave and one way Hotz heading East from Defuniak to Garfield, then one way Garfield north. The remaining streets can remain two way and it wouldn't cause huge headaches.

good point.....

I'm not advocating towing - just issuing a few parking tickets so that people take the signs and "bumper" lines seriously.

Seems incredibly stupid to change the roads and traffic flow when all we really need is an incentive for people to move their vehicles forward a couple feet.

That's true, but my option requires repainting of lines and some signage one time cost. Yours requires the staffing of a position an ongoing cost.

P.S. The Sheriff's deputy that is there is paid by the Red Bar, I don't think Oli is going to subsidize ticket writing.

This has been an issue with SWFD in several neighborhoods and the culprit starts with Planning and Zoning. There appears to be a total lack of regard for public safety when approving developement. I've brought this concern up to P & Z and so has the staff of SWFD.

Look at Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Hwy 395 N when parents are dropping off/picking up kids and blocking all traffic. I think it is criminal, yet it doesn't seem to be a valid concern within the county govt.

It does seem like making this a one way street (during the season?) would help congestion.

I’m sure you’ve discussed it for years, but what about busing patrons in from a parking lot off site? Like when you go to a ski resort or a golf tournament, but in a fun beachy way.

Of course my little vision is a cool Trolley Car decked out in fabulous Red Bar d?cor with fun people on board. (But a more realistic version might be a neat old VW Bus?).

It picks families up from “Lot A”, drops them off for the beach or dinner for a nominal fee, and just runs the short loop as often as needed for the busy season. Maybe I’m off here, but I’m thinking the tips from diners alone might be substantial. It would be much cheaper than a valet service that they use at home, it is an optional service, and it cuts down on vehicle congestion (or the race to get a spot).

All I know is that this occurred on the 4th of July evening and it was very scary! We were sitting on DeFuniak Street observing from up high and yes, there was NO WAY the trucks were going to get through. Thank goodness there wasn't a fire actually, but what happens next time. If it were my family's house on fire, you can believe I'm finding the biggest truck and ramming every car in the way so they can get through. Lets just hope this never happens! Walton County most definitely has some huge problems when it comes to parking. :yikes:

I don't think that we have a parking problem or lack of parking. I've seen far too many 8 passenger SUV's pull up at local businesses in mass and one to two people get out of each vehicle. All in the same group and most likely from the same condo or house.

Most days in Grayton, I have a tough enough time driving a small SUV on the crowded streets where people park in various ways. If oncoming traffic is present, it gets very tight, as some people think they need to drive down the center line.

I like the big picture thinking in some of the posts here, especially about the incredible good sense bus/trolley service makes, and the good sense it would make if more people would choose to drive appropriate size vehicles and park properly! I don't see why ticketing violators would be such a bad idea -- the word gets out, and drivers shape up or pay the price; the county develops new source of revenue; traffic improves. win win win as I see it.
