Please be careful when shooting that garbage off this weekend. It's dry as a bone here and one dumba.. is all it takes for the whole place to go up in flames. Also if you must shoot them off how bout cleaning up after yourselves!!! I'm tired of people trashing up this area.(see Smiling Joes piece on Beach leftovers) Would've been better for our County Officials to install a ban on fireworks since it's so dang dry here but we know who they all work for!

Walton County Commissioners did issue a ban on fireworks unless one obtains a permit (ie those given to the big shows). However, they will not do anything to enforce it. They can throw you in the slammer and fine you, but we all know that only obnoxiously drunk @ssholes who shoot the illegal fireworks will be looked at if anyone.

Most of the fireworks seen in SoWal being shot from the beach are illegal to begin with -- hasn't stopped anyone yet. To prevent it, we would need about 500 cops on the beach arresting people.

SJ,

I'm in favor of letting the 4th of July trash lie on the beach after the fireworks show. If the locals don't clean up the mess, then maybe the visitors will complain to the businesses, the businesses will complain to the Chamber, and the Chamber will complain to the Commissioners who have the power to do something about it. That's my plan and I'm sticking to it.

Jan:

Feel free to leave the trash beside any of the 300+ trash receptacles that we empty daily along the beach and save your trip to the TDC ;-)

:nono1: Brad, please don't feed us animals. Please do not do that. I see too much crap, usually broken chairs, tents and floats beside the beach trash cans waiting to be blown away. Can you imagine making a pile of fireworks debris on the beach just waiting to be blown around for a second crew to pick it up.

If you pick it up, take it off the beach and place it in the garbage. The TDC is not the ones at which to point fingers in this case. The problem is the lack of staff enforcing the existing laws.

Last night, we had a great mini-show of fireworks next door to Alys Beach. If the cops didn't stop them, they sure is heck are not going to stop 10,000 of them tomorrow.

Never thought I would say or think this, but its time the cops put a stop to the July 4th party on Grayton Beach. Most of the fireworks are illegal, very dangerous for hundreds of children and adults in the middle of it all, and all the resulting trash and damage to the beach environment is not worth it.

If the County is going to ban illegal fireworks, then I hope they will show up and enforce.

Wish we could enjoy a relaxing sunset at Grayton Beach on the 4th! We'll have to wait til after the holiday, then we'll have to clean it up before we can enjoy it. The trash is always unimaginable! Kurt will be cussing and cleaning for hours...

Stopping it altogether is impossible. In addition to Grayton Beach, the roman candles will be going off ALL up and down 26 miles of beach (except maybe the state parks). Also, the 331 causeway is very popular. My best guess would be to enforce the ban on the causeway because they are all in one spot and if the dry grass flares up, it will get ugly on 331 - and then everyone on duty would be there dealing with traffic.

I hate to see all the trash too, but at least the beach isn't flammable.

Doesn't anyone find it interesting that the County has decided to ban something which is already illegal?

Not at all. You know those things they sell in the parking lot at Wal-Mart in DFS that smoke & twirl and shoot LARGE amounts of sparks? Those are legal in Florida - and I would think they would pose much more of a fire threat than the illegal fly-up-in-the-air stuff.
