Free computer -- bad hard drive

Beach Runner

beats on hood
I have a computer that I bought in January 2008 used from IT at the college where I teach. They swap out the desktops about once a year. It has a bad hard drive. I didn't get it fixed because they had another sale in August, so I just bought another used one.

PM me if you are interested.

Gateway 4100:
Pentium 4 – 2.6 GHz
15” flat panel monitor
256 MB Memory
40GB Hard Drive
DVD, CDRW, and floppy drive
Keyboard, mouse, and speakers

they change them out yearly and it still has only 256 MB RAM?

Thanks for putting it in the free box.
I think they were bought in August 2006 for a lab where students were using only Microsoft Office (pre-Office 2007), a browser, and email. They changed them out over Christmas break 2007 and went on sale in January 2008.

The only apps I use on the beach computer are OpenOffice (free) and a browser. The 256K RAM is plenty fast for that. If someone is installing Office 2007, they'll need at least 2GB.

The used one I just bought for the beach has 1GB RAM, 40GB hard drive. Don't need a boatload of RAM since I'm not paying for Office 2007 when I can get OpenOffice and AVG free. Besides, I always bring my laptop which is loaded.

You're welcome re the free box.

Put XP SP3 on it. That will test your patience. Of course it would have to work for that to happen.
