It is said that the first fifty years of a marriage are the hardest....

Marriage is easy. Unselfishness is hard. Long term committment is hard. Communication is hard. IMO modern society is very difficult on a marriage. There seems to be a lot of emphasis on immediate gratification or "self" rather than being an unselfish partner. Entire communities should come together and celebrate marriages that survive 25 years or more. I believe marriage may be the fabric of our society.
