Getting kill shelter cat today!!!

New posts
I didn't know you had a doggie IBD? The cat may be timid and might be slightly intimidated by the dog regardless of what the shelter told you.

I have to agree with Mermaid. I have two adult cats for many years that were strays actually, and although cats sleep a lot more than dogs, when they are awake, they want attention, and if they don't get it right away, they sulk. If it were up to one of my cats, he would be in my lap all day.
The also like to play even though they are older. Female cats especially need more stimulation as their instinct is to hunt and bring back food for their young, so chasing strings, and balls stimulate them or they get bored easy.

Kittens are much more difficult to manage. They require a "training period" as well, and they get into everything! I got sucked into bringing home a kitten from a little boy at the grocery store. We named it Hannibal Lecter. It would climb walls and scratch etc. It got to the point where I was afraid to come home! Fortunately my friends cat has just passed and the cat looked like her previous one, and she took the kitten.

IBD: wish I could take her, but I've got two cats inside, two out and a lab. the lab makes the lives of the cats miserable. I would love to bring her home with me, but just can't. I hope you do find a good home for Francie. She's a beautiful cat.

OK, I am about to boo hoo now, my son and his wife are getting rid of the 3 bigger cats. Caesar, Cammy and Patty. I made it clear to them I did not want them in a animal shelter where they will be put down. They are worried Caesar who is around 9 years old and just stays on the couch in the living room sleeping or under the couch will get in the baby bed. The two female sisters would be more likely to do that. They are going to try and find them good homes first. Our Collierville Animal Shelter is a no kill shelter, as is they say the Bartlett Animal Shelter. I do not believe that. Anyway, I wish some of the cat lovers on this forum site were closer that could take them. Caesar is the calmest cat. And Cammy and Patty are going to be highly upset that they will no longer be with their human mommy and daddy they have known for almost a year. Do cats remember certain people that long??? I am sad! :(

Lady, do you have a Pet Smart store or pet shop near you? There used to be a house with a barn owned by an elderly man 13 years ago in my neighborhood before it got built up. The man let cats live in his barn and didnt neuter or spay, and some of them would make their way around the neighborhood.
My neighbors and I brought some cats over a two year period that strayed off his land that were friendly to Pet Smart, and they were adopted quite quickly.

There is a Pet Smart out in Cordova. Don't know where you lived. If it was that area, that area is so built up now I am sure his house isn't there. I am hoping they will take them to the Collierville Animal Shelter as it is definitely a no kill shelter. They are on tv every Saturday morning with some shelter dogs that they are trying to find homes for. I would rather them do an online form on the House of Mews site. They can fill it out online stating having to get rid of their cat because of a new baby, etc. And when they have room available, then they take them in. I sure don't want them to get rid of Caesar. He belonged to my son's best friend Trey. He has a dog and the dog was pulling the cat's hair out so he got my son to take him.

The kittens are more adoptable. Period. Good luck finding homes for the older ones, especially if they are not spayed/neutered. Grown cats are hard to place, as they are harder to adapt and assimilate into new households.

It is not a big deal to keep cats out of the crib. I had 2 indoor cats when Will was born, and 3 when Kate came along. Yeah, every now and then, I would find one curled up in her bed. So what? At night we closed the door to her room.

As long as the cats are neutered/spayed, vaccinated, flea-free, and your DIL is not changing the litterbox while pregnant, they should be fine. But they have too many cats, so finding new homes for the kittens should help.

I was getting you mixed up with someone else on the board that used to live here in Memphis. :bang: Oh boy. Oh well, anyway, 6 cats are alot. Caesar is neutered, very calm temperament. There is a House of Mews that strictly takes in cats. They live cage free like being in a regular home. When they have a space come up they notify you, and take your cat in. I have looked at that site. They have many beautiful cats.

I so agree with jdarg on this. They do have too many cats in that small apartment and getting rid of the kittens should not be a problem. However, I feel strongly that they should not get rid of the older cats. They can all live together if they want too. I think it is very unfair of anyone to get rid of their animals that they have loved just because a baby comes into the picture. Now, granted if it were an aggressive dog that was aggressive to the child, then yes in that case I would suggest finding a good home for it. Cats are not usually overly aggressive to a child. I had an adult cat when my son was born. I just watched her and kept her out of my son's room. It is not that hard to do. I feel so sorry for these cats, they just seem to be disposable to your son and DIL.
