Got Icebergs in Northern MI

Hi Everyone,

It's been a long cold winter here in Michigan. A friend sent me these photo's of Icebergs in the U.P. of MI. I remember driving up to visit our son when he was in college at MI TECH. in Houghton MI. & seeing the ice formations off Lake Superior!!! I understand if you die in the U.P. during winter you get buried in July when they chip you out of the ice. Now that is cold. Good thing I live in Southern MI.

I can't wait to live on 30-A, someday!!!!

Wow! I had no idea that there are bergs in the Yupper. Breathtaking!
I inhaled a breath of burning cold air when I looked at those pics! Y'know... when the air is SO COLD it has the weird sensation of BURNING your nasal passages?

Ditto! Ice that blue is usually glacier ice.

Are those in the Lake or is that the ice pushed up at the edges?

scotterbug,

I checked my MI source and this is what I was told. Water will freeze the instant the wave broke through the ice when the temperature of the water is already some degrees below freezing. I personally have seen huge ice mountains along the Lake Superior shoreline & I assume some of these photo's happen when the lake ice pushes ice dams into the shore.

Here's some more interesting information from my source (see photo's). Iceburgs in the lake sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow conditions. Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with melt water and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form. Also, when an iceberg falls into the lake a layer of water can freeze to the underside if this is rich in alga, it can forma a green stripe. also brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the lake. Interesting stuff.

Are you saying the first pictures are of frozen waves/gushers coming through pressure cracks? That is usually more of a seep than a wave.

I am using to see huge piles of ice at the edges of the body of water when the wind/pressure drives them up, but those blue things are just too cool!
