A little more? When you figure all the taxes, fees and permits I have to pay from the local, state and federal governments, about 50% of my income goes to "promote the welfare of us all." I can see paying my fair share, but HALF? Why should anyone work hard if half of what they make is taken from them and given to someone else? And then suffer the gall of someone telling me that a tax break that allows me to keep a little more of what I EARNED or allows me to provide my family health care that I WORKED for is WELFARE? I don't want to hurt anyone, I just want to be treated fairly.

So you're saying that half of what you make goes directy towards things that you have absolutely no use for. I don't believe that.

Scott?s cuts will erase $740,000 annually from the roughly $3 million budget of Manasota ARC. For the past decade, the local agency has provided services for individuals in Manatee and Sarasota with developmental disabilities, said Dierdra Walker, acting executive director at Manasota ARC, whose acronym stands for Association for Retarded Citizens.

The rate cuts may force the closure of Susan Rex?s home along with five other residential group homes that Manasota ARC runs in Manatee County for 40 people, Walker said Sunday.

Manasota ARC also runs an Adult Day Training site at 3659 Cortez Rd. W. where 85 people go Monday through Friday to assemble boxes and pens for pay, as well as create jewelry and paintings that are sold at Manasota ARC?s yearly fund-raiser, City Slickers.

I know your side is against federal and state employees but to say the money is "given" to and not earned by firefighters, police, teachers, municipal workers and others is a pretty sad comment.

What a totally unfair and spun post! At least keep it honest! No where in his post do I see anything about firefighters, police, teachers or municipal workers being "given" money instead of earning it.
It is probably a good thing only members can see the political forum now as it amounts to, at most, approximately 30 at any one time. The opinions expressed by so many here defy logical explaination and are not indicative of the general populace of South Walton County.

I am not "against" state or federal workers at all. They are OUR employees and I think they earn every penny they get. In fact, liberal policies have hurt rather than helped them. Take teachers for example. The arcane, dictatorial funding policies forced on our local school board by Tallahasseee funnels huge amounts of money to capital funds and prohibits spending those funds on employees. So, Walton County has the money to pay cash for huge new schools all over the county ( every high school in the county is 10 years old or less while every high school in Okaloosa County is over 30 years old)
but does not have the funds to hire enough teachers and pay them what they deserve. Do you really think our local school board would do worse if their hands were untied?

Less government should mean more local control.
