I thought I'd post instructions as many great people have asked how they can help so we'll just spread the word.....
Many people are just unaware of the situation and the media certainly doesn't tell them how it really is. Sending to everyone you know is a great help.
FEEDING
The situation is VERY bad, worse than you can possibly imagine. We have reports that the LA SPCA is telling the public to throw the food away that feeders put down because it is a health hazard and they are trying to force all rescue groups out of the area.
If anyone can go to NOLA to feed, they can contact Sharon Gorski at
possecop@msn.com
There are still a few rescuers on the ground and Sharon has contacts with ARNO, Best Friends and Alley Cat and she can best direct people to an organization if they want to go to an organized (or not so organized) unit. Alternatively, those who want to cut out the red tape can just drive down with food, water and large paper or plastic bowls and just hide them behind bushes or whatever. The animals will find it and numerous homes are still abandoned. They should not approach animals unless the animal comes to them. If they find an animal that needs help, they should call or bring it if it's too weak to a rescue org. Best Friends/ARNO is :
Celebration Station
5959 Veterans Memorial Blvd.; Metairie, LA 70003
(across the street from Kirschman's Furniture)
504-887-2115
They will intake or get the animal or have someone come get it.
The local authorities don't want us there unless we're spending money downtown saying how New Orleans is as great as ever, so you wouldn't want to tresspass on occupied homes. It's kind of a thing where grass root people just need to jump in at this point, (always have had to because the government and big organizations unfortunately are more interested in media and photo ops than they are in doing right by the animals. I know their job isn't easy and everyone down there was unprepared for what we found but it's their job to not allow this to happen and believe me many local police and politicians couldn't care less about the animals.
REUNITING
Helping with reuniting is time consuming and finding people's pets is like a needle in a haystack but it can be done. Lot's of reunions have occurred and it's so rewarding when you hit one. The databases are all messed up. Poor records and photos were taken during rescue, the animals are all over the country now and many of the owners still have limited or no access to the internet so they have people post a missing notice for them but they can't put the time into finding them because they either don't have access or are overwhelmed trying to get their lives back together.
To assist in reuniting, some locations to review for lost and found pets are:

http://disaster.petfinder.org/emergency/
People wishing to help with reuniting just need to read and read and read and they will find a way to help. I just began reading posts of people looking for their pets. I emailed them and asked if they have more photos. You have to just pick a couple and start combing the databases for a match - you can't work on too many at a time. You might need to go back a couple of months in the postings to find the missing pet requests for help. Post the photos for your target pets all over the place. Petfinder is where most owners know to look so if you can search alternative locales (listed on those links above, you may have more success). Many of the postings on petfinder don't have photos so if I find one with a description like my target, I tell the searching owner or email the person holding the pet with no photo to see if this could be the target. Imagine looking for your 8 year old dog, it's alive in Pennsylvania and there's no photo of him posted, Just "Brown and White Dog". I email the poster with the photos that the owner provides or ask for a description of the animal if it only says "black and white cat" and that's what I'm looking for. Sometimes the posting will have where the animal was picked up which also helps.
EXPOSURE
Many of us have been working on the NOLA pet rescue since early on but it's not to late to help and many earlier rescuers need to get back to their lives. Post on boards. Tell everyone you know to just read about the situation and tell people not to buy pets - to rescue one instead.
OTHER WAYS TO HELP
Money isn't the issue here, time is. So no one should be donating money to large groups. If you read the links above now and then and find someone who needs a dog taken care of for a few months or needs a dog or cat transported a few hours away, take a drive and get that animal to the person. If you know someone who has land that they aren't using, they can foster starving horses or cattle (because there's no pasture for them to eat from the floods and muck). Just educate yourself and you will find something that is the right way for you to help.
I promise you that if you decide to learn more it will be overwhelming but don't let that deter you. Most of these animals will die. Just go into it with the hopes of helping one. It will make you cry and it will make you angry but even the smallest thing that you do might save 1, 20 or 100. Look at our results on this board 1 post - 3 dogs saved thanks to Katie! Everyone of us know people from all walks of life and you never know how far your words will reach.
You will understand when you begin to read the links above and if you need me, I'm here.
