I want to know who voted, "I don't use the internet."

My bet is...SHELLY! It would have something to do with $10.00 an hour jobs in India.

Well, but...I use high speed in Atl, and dial-up in SoWal. There's no choice in the poll for that.

Although last week when I was down at the beach, I finally purchased a wireless card for my laptop. One day I was posting to you all while sitting in the grass in Seaside amphitheatre. Very cool.

It's unbelievable how suddenly we're living in the Future. Sometime in the recent past, without realizing it, we all became the Jetsons. Heck, I even have a robot vacuum.

SJ: IMHO, go to town with your website, optimize for high-speed. You can always put the pertinent info in a low-speed page if necessary. But moreso, people on dial up will already be used to the 15 second wait, they deal with that routinely anyway. just 2c.

does miss lucilles have wireless service ? i can't remember ... if she does, i am so there with our junky delapidated laptop that i am too cheap to replace !

I've used dsl since I could get it at my address. I kept checking until the website of my isp said it was available, then signed up. I'll never go back. I also provide high speed wireless at my beach house for guests (and me of course). I'm hooked.

you might as well make this a list of places to avoid if i am using a computer anywhere in the vacinity, guarantee miss lucilles with go down, crash, quit working, any number of other possibilities if i try our laptop there.

I wasn't sure which way to "vote" (so I didn't). Dial up now. Will shift to cable grade 1st of Feb. but only 'cause I got a deal; $100 a month for 2nd tier digi. cable TV (no premium channels like HBO, etc.), IP phone (unlimited long distance) and internet. After a year, price goes up to "normal" - probably about $140/mo. & at that point I might go back to dial-up, unless they drop it to more like $120/mo. If I drop cable internet & they hike phone to compensate, I'll drop that too. As much on principle as cost.

Dial up only costs me $120/year. I'd pay a hair more than double that for high speed (over the long haul), but not the 4 times that TimeWarner, Comcast, & the like want to charge today.

My advice on web (SJ), is keep design lean and don't presume high speed. Presenting information (I presume that's what your web will be about) doesn't require a bunch of bandwidth chewing graphics to be effective - and it is a mighty irritation (even WITH high speed) to the user when web designers forget that simple fact. Where graphics are fundamental (e.g. real estate), be frugal with bandwidth by default (it's easy enough to provide alternate links for higher quality images).

While something like 70% of US housholds have cable TV or equiv. like dish, broadband penetration is only about 25%, and about 20% of households don't even have the option.
