Hubba Hubba Reunion
at Red Fish Taco September 18th from 5 to 8 pm.
The music scene in South Walton has a rich and youthful history. In its infancy, not many decades ago, you would never have known about where to hear live music unless you were an insider. No social media tagging mind you, most of us didn’t even have cell phones.
Those days we would gather at Bailey’s on the Bay. It was one of the only live music spots in what we now call SoWal, 30A or South Walton. And the band that brought us together was Hubba Hubba.
Hubba Hubba started as a two piece band with Franko “Washboard” Jackson and Duke Bardwell. “Washboard Jackson'' had heard of Duke through his songs. "Washboard" played on the streets of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Duke played bass for Elvis people, of course you probably already knew that. It’s here in South Walton where Duke and “Washboard” Jackson became local legends. Jackson on the Washboard and Duke on the guitar, with Bill Garrett on bass & Doug Dickerson on lead guitar - the music was inspiring and fun to be a part of. We admired their talent and we became groupies in the sense we loved the band and the people who loved them fervently. It was southern-fried funk and rhythm and blues that never leaves your soul.
The many nights we would all travel down dark county roads to be together - all in awe of the sheer talent and fun these guys provided is something we still talk about to this day. Years went by and the band added and subtracted talent that outshined a hot summer day. Eventually, John Reinlie joined the band to replace Case Cooper on percussion. Washboard and John quickly became close friends and he began to teach John to understand and play the Washboard instrument with soul and Franko-style. We lost Franko “Washboard” Jackson in 2019. But his love of making music and that big ass smile are always in the air when Hubba Hubba throws down!
In honor and remembrance of Franko “Washboard” Jackson, as many of the band members as possible, and a few other awesome musicians are bringing back HUBBA HUBBA to 30A for a reunion show. The show is Sunday, September 18th at Red Fish Taco from 5 to 8 pm.
Jackson always said, “You can’t go to all the parties all the time, But you can sure try!” Whether you are an old friend or a new to the area, we hope to see you there! It’s going to be an epic celebration!
