Also similar disappointing service at great southern. Will write more when we get home. Bad week. Stayed somewhere we hadn't stayed since the turn of the century. Bad beach etiquette:-). Best part of our trip was the 4 breweries in Birmingham on the stop over on the way down.
Rain. Big waves. Jelly fish. Dirty water? From Eastern Lake. Goes on and on.
Food was really good at both places but had to ask to order entrees at great southern and at la crema we wanted desert but she gave us our check instead. Since it's just the two of us we will look for indoor bars to dine at so we don't get ignored.
There. I've said too much:-)
First time ever (since the turn of the century) that we don't have a reservation for next year. Some time will have to pass :-(

Probably a symptom of too damn many people. That's been the consensus this summer. There are better times of the year to vacation here. That's not dirty water in Eastern Lake. It's a natural product that leeches from the roots of plants bordering the lake. It's called tannin. I think the inlet looked good, but because of the extreme dogleg, salt water wasn't able to wash back into the lake. It's wonderful in the autumn.

Wikipedia, and LOCAL com thru again! The condensed version:
"The leaching of highly water soluble tannins from decaying vegetation and leaves along a stream may produce what is known as a blackwater river. Water flowing out of bogs has a characteristic brown color from dissolved peat tannins. The presence of tannins (or humic acid) in well water can make it smell bad or taste bitter, but this does not make it unsafe to drink."[SUP][23][/SUP]

Sorry to hear this, Ellen. I have never heard you complain about a bad trip before. Maybe we can help plan your next beach trip!!

So sorry to hear that the trip was a bad one. It was not a good week weatherwise but may I offer a suggestion? Try the Western end of 30A. While nothing is ever perfect, the area from Topsail to Grayton Beach offers both wonderful accomodations and great food. It is only my opinion but I feel the East end of 30A is highly over rated and more expensive as well.

Sorry that you guys had a bad experience this time, Ellen. I can attest that this year has been a beast, not an excuse, just an observation. I can even say that I was un-necessarily rude to some of my customers yesterday after a day when one thing after another had gone wrong. I've written an apology on facebook that I hope they see but bad impressions are so hard to fix.
Hope to see you soon, looking forward to a great football season, "Go Cards".

Well Ellen, sorry to hear about your trip. Yes too damn many folks this Summer could be one of the issues, but please look beyond those negatives and see the positives of your trip. I hope you come back to Sowal in the fall, and experience this wonderful/beautiful place.

BTW your cards play my tigers in the kickoff classic next year, so go Tigers! Will root for your cards during Bball season, hahaha.
