I wouldn't want this job

Get a load of this photo. Those are our roofers. The roof's been leaking for months but we've had such bad storms here that everyone else's was, too, so we were on a long waiting list.

So they pick one of the snowiest, iciest months in Indiana to climb up on the roof and tear off the top.

I wouldn't want this job for a million dollars! They did the roof like it was a piece of cake. Brave men. :clap_1: (Crazy men)

OMG!!!! Mermaid...they took your whole roof off??? Please tell me that it is fixed or tarped or something!!!

In Texas, it's the opposite problem....the heat in summer when those roofers are working! Hats off to the roofers!!!

How did they climb around on the snowy part? Seems like would have slid right down.

Your house is fantastic!

No, not the whole roof, luckily. Only the top bit where the dormers are. It's flat. I still am shaking my head about them getting up there. They had to shovel the snow off the roof first! I don't know how they didn't slip and kill themselves. It's a looooong way down from the top. They'd have splatted instantly.

Thanks for thinking the house is fantasic, but right now I think it's a fantastic pain in the bumpus! It's 80 years old and showing its age none too gracefully these past few years. I'm not feeling very kindly about it. :( I think that's why I love SoWal so much: it's the complete antithesis of what we have at home.

We are in a 10 year old house now- no creaks, groans, pretty moldings, big old doors- no personality! I can't wait to move back into an old house. My friend moved into a 100+ year old house downtown- half the windows painted shut and drafty, but beautiful pocket doors, staircase, transoms over every interior door, ancient iron fence and gate- all the stuff I love! I have house envy- but she has had to wrok really hard to get it clean and put together.

Your house is magnificent! Kudo's for the guys that showed up! As Texas, in Georgia in the summer to get a guy to show Jul- Aug is a feat!

what a lovely old house, Mermaid! I'm amazed roofers would come and work now--we have similar climate issues here, and roofers have quit (at least residential ones) for the season.

We had beautiful old houses in Bham and in St Louis--but they are a sink for money--and unexpected repairs. (there was the time we were having a dinner party in St. Louis and it rained---hard--and water came pouring in the *inside* of my daughter's bedroom window. Turned out her flat roof (this was a brownstone house) had not had proper flashing, and the water came in thru one of the outside brick walls. Sort of put a damper on the dinner party.....

Glad to know your roof was fixed.

At least we hope it was fixed! We started out with coffee cans to hold the dripping rainwater in the attic, then graduated to bathroom waste baskets, and finally brought out the big guns--garbage cans! It was at that point we hired bonafide roofers instead of handymen. Let's hope the roof holds.

I love living in old houses but they ARE moneypits in terms of repair and maintenance. Sometimes you let a lot of things go because of the $$, look around, and realise that you are living in magnificent squalor. With old houses, there is a definite price for beauty.

And speaking of beauty, gotothebeachmom, how is that handsome young grandson doing???

He's growing by leaps and bounds! GTTBD gave him a bottle tonight for the first time! Funny how nervous he was! He did a fine job, even if he handed him off to me about 1/3 of the way through! Like someone had to twist my arm! ;-)
