If you like clouds....

New posts
#8 kind of looks like Mr. Rainier here in Washington State - I've seen numerous lenticular clouds coming off of it the past few months.

Great pictures!

The wildest clouds I've ever seen were when I was working at Boeing in Fort Walton Beach and one afternoon there was a serious thunderstorm with tornadoes rolling in and the clouds looked as though they were five hundred feet off the ground and literally rolling like ocean waves - looked like the end of days. We were totally freaking out and heading back inside the building to take cover.

Those were pretty cool, some of them I hadn't heard of. There's a rare one they didn't mention that creates almost holes in the clouds. Someone sent a picture in a month or two back to WJHG and they explained it. I know the meteorologist lurks, perhaps he can post it here.

Anybody remember hearing that a halo around the moon meant it was going to snow. Growing up in Florida they used to show up all the time and I'd get excited as a kid. Never once...

I always heard it meant it was gonna rain same time tomorrow. But, I think my grandmother made up a bunch of crap just to shut me up.

Sorry... been neglecting my 'lurking' responsibilities. :-)

Cirrus - The saying about the cirrus clouds has some truth to it... cirrus clouds often foretell rain 48hrs in advance. This is because the moisture returns aloft first allowing for the cirrus clouds (made of ice crystals) to form. Gradually the clouds lower over the next couple days then form rain or snow. Of course in our case... it is always rain, but up north it can mean snow! You want to leave SoWal and verify this?? :-) Be my guest!

Roll - Is this the cloud you were talking about? This was shot on PCB on 3/29 I believe by a viewer... nthernlights-pcb-clouds-3-29.JPG
It formed from decaying t'storms to our west I believe. Anyway, here is an article explaining them

Hole Punch - My AM Meteorologist, Jim Loznicka, did a http://loznickaland.com/?s=hole+punchblog entry explaining the hole punch clouds.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask questions any time and thanks for watching!
