Does anyone have experience as a certified in-home care provider or know the best way to find in-home care providers in the area?
We are moving our father with us in Point Washington in about 6 weeks and will need certified providers.

We searched the yellow pages for home health providers in Newnan, GA, where my Mom lives. Here's a list yellowpages.com for Santa Rosa Beach http://www.yellowpages.com/santa-ro...g=Santa+Rosa+Beach,+FL&q=Home+Health+Services . My sister, brother, and I talked to several agencies, chose one, and then interviewed the person they recommended. We used an agency so if the caregiver got sick or whatever, the agency could send someone else. My brother and I don't work in Newnan, and our sister lives in Dallas, so if there was a no show, we couldn't get there in time.

Mom has her own home. At first we only had care for her in the waking hours. But one night she got up and fell and broke her hip. So we realized that she needed 24/7 care. The best rate we could get was $15 an hour ($131,400 a year). So we put her in an assisted-living home. That's not 100% perfect because they only have to check on the residents every two hours. They usually put the ones who need more help in the common living area so they can keep an eye on them during the day.

But since he'll be living with you, you won't need 24/7 help unless you have a full-time job or if he needs help bathing, toileting, etc.

Good luck! We've been managing Mom's care since 2005 (I think that's right).

Good luck. Just know that with the elderly who need care, it is a constantly changing situation, I am amazed at how many major decisions we've had to make. Mom has been from in-home care during the day ($3,650 per month), to rehab from the fall ($6000 per month), to assisted living ($4,000 per month), to death-bed (I dunno how much that cost), to nursing home ($8,000 per month), and back to assisted living ($4,000 per month). These are all out-of-pocket expenses after Medicare pays their part.

I personally do not make $8,000 times 12 per month take-home as a tenured, full professor and department chair which Mom will eventually need. So I don't know what we'll do when Mom runs out of money. I have too many years left to retire early because I need health insurance for my husband and daughter, and I lose it if I retire early.

Depending on your father's condition and your schedules, we found that having a caregiver come in weekday mornings worked well.

Luckily, he has a long term health care insurance plan that covers the cost:) My concern is that living in South Walton gives us a limited pool of candidates looking for work:(
And there is the issue that they will be caring for him in my home so I will want to screen them well.

That's good. After all of the money it has cost to care for Mom, I signed up for long-term health care.

Yes, when a caregiver comes into your home, not only does s/he need to have certain attributes for caring for your father, but you need to be able to get along with the person. I remember before our daughter went to kindergarten, we had a full-time nanny. One of them was so "in our face." When I can home from work at lunchtime to fix lunch for hubby/daughter/me (we live 1 mile from where I work and 3 miles from where hubby worked), she expected me to prep for her too. She'd park her butt at the kitchen table and watch TV. Hubby and I couldn't even carry on a conversation because she was always yapping. He stopped coming home for lunch. Got rid of her fast. I guess I should have laid out the rules up front, but the previous nanny was so perfect and gave us space, so I didn't expect that. (She left because she was underemployed as a nanny -- she was an R.N.).

Hope you find the perfect caregiver!
