Is the Customer Always Right?

Some other threads have reminded me to reassess long held axioms... so I'm curious about folks' thoughts on this old classic:

"the customer is always right"

Does anyone know when/who coined this phrase?
Henry Ford? Sam Walton?

Perhaps this is one of those marketing blurbs that has lived and prospered long enough and should RIP.

The fact is - as customers we are not always right. Sometimes we're just moody spoiled pills. This little phrase may be contributing to false sense of entitlement.

Corporate america still has a long ways to go in customer service. I am in the middle of fiasco with Lowe's now. And all I am trying to do is buy my grandmother an energy efficient refrigerator.

At first, I thought, "Sears," who always prided themselves on stellar customer service, never arguing with a customer. A quick look just revealed it was Marshall Field, also a large department store founder.....the one I know of, also in Chicago.

In addition, he coined, "Give the lady what she wants." I can digg it~~~~~~

Sears was "satisfaction guaranteed" in the old days.
