In the link below, Richard Cohen argues that the GOP has become a cult.

One hallmark of a cult is replacing reason with blind adherence to certain principles. In the instant case, the principles include

(1) any tax increase, any time, under any circumstances is bad & must be opposed

(2) any abortion, any time, under any circumstances is bad & must be opposed

(3) anthropic climate change is a myth

(4) human evolution is doubtful at best

Has the GOP become a cult?

I don't think it's a cult, but blind faith and adherence to beliefs despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary rarely ends well.

When you blindly sign a pledge to never raise taxes, when you haven't even took office yet, in the middle of an historic debt crisis, it means you're guzzling at the kool-aid trough.

How about when you send out petitions and threaten to withdraw your vote for a party/candidate at the mere suggestion that they might be thinking about reforming or tweaking a massive entitlement program during a historic debt crisis?

Kool-aid comes in both blue and red.

Ann Coulter now states in her new book that the extreme Left has a Mob mentality. Now the extreme Right has a Cult mentality.
I guess the middle ground is the higher ground, but who represents them?

This article is a piece of crap meant to get Mr. Cohen back slaps at whatever leftist cocktail parties he will be attending this weekend. To become a Republican, you register as such with the registrar of voters. Same as becoming a Democrat, Indy or you name it. As a registered Democrat, I assure you there are plenty of cultish nuts in the tent.

Actually, I think BHO represents the middle ground.
His true passion seems to be in brokering deals, bringing sides together.
The Left is complaining that he's functioning more as a facilitator in these negotiations, rather than functioning as a passionate advocate for the traditional/historical interests of the Left.
BHO is a hard-core Moderate.

This is so true. And it is exactly why I respect him. He is acting presidential, rather than partisan. He recognizes the fact that any "solutions" are going to come with compromise.
