Just now I was almost run over on Highway 98 ...by a jet plane! Yikes

At 8:59 I was on Highway 98 adjacent to Cafe Provence and a medium sized jet came roaring along the highway and was so low I thought it was falling...I tried to see what kind of plane it was, but it was moving too fast...headed in a Southeast direction, over the Gulf, looked to be a mid-size private jet--no commercial markings that I saw, and it was not a military plane that I recognized.

It was loud and low and scary as hell.

You would be surprised how many commercial business jets the military uses. The Coast Guard uses them all the time up and down the gulf, but their's have the orange markings. Could have been a Department of Homeland Security plane. They use plain ol' white aircraft with minimal markings.

More than likely it was somebody coming into Destin who decided that they wanted to run down the beach a ways to sightsee before they landed. I know I always used to do that when I flew the 172 down.

Yeah, I see the Coasties all the time and I have seen what must have been Homeland Security, the white planes; but, this was silver and was still climbing West to East, so it must have taken off at Destin; Eglin is too far, it would have been higher by the time it reached here. It was flying directly along the highway, and started the turn out over the Gulf just as it screamed over me.
Frankly, it looked like a smaller (as in length) but wider version of a F22 without any markings.

Whatever it was, it was scary. Just hope the pilot knew what he or she was doing.....

If they were low enough to alarm you, they weren't doing a standard landing or takeoff from a local airport.

Sounds like someone was joy riding or training.

yeah, there was certainly nothing standard about it.....

if it was an older looking aircraft it was likely a few things. one, surveying. two, bug spraying and you cant really see or hear the actual spray. three, st joe company. it sounds like the same plane that has been flying low for many years and its normally its bug spraying......believe it or not.

The spraying was discontinued around here last year (year before that maybe?) so I am going with a private jet taking off out of Destin.....
