Keeping the library open longer

New posts
SJ,

The hours of operation have been set based on prior usage, experimentation, and survey of patrons. It has been open longer at times in the past, but the folks just didn't come. I'll see if Dan and Katie can try again for the later hours, at least matching Freeport.

It is partially a budget issue as well. There is an unfilled part-time position at Coastal Branch that HR is not filling until we get through the budget process...as they're doing with all vacant positions in the county right now.

The folks don't come because it all seems pointless! They don't need an education to clean condos, work in hotels, outlet stores, or restaurants. However, with current foreclosures, and economic conditions, people need to do something to better themselves. Some public service announcements would be in order, along with some serious negotiations with prospective industries.

I would love the library to have later hours, but can certainly understand why they have the current hours as I've never waited in line to check out a book or use a computer.

Most people seem to use the computers for email/internet based on my weekly observations and their easily overhead comments. I do not know whether those emails are business or personal as I'm not THAT nosy.

If someone truly wants to use the library computers to "better themselves" and increase their options and they are working in the service industry, the current hours easily allow for this.

I'm not about to spoon feed people w/ a jobs program if they can't motivate themselves or put some effort into it themselves. If there really weren't jobs available that required more than a high school education, most of us wouldn't be here.
