bsmart, the two places are night and day. He doesn't like SoWal like I don't like Key West.:D Not everyone likes the Nothing-to-do atmosphere of SoWal and that is okay by me. ;-) Sometimes, I wish that fewer people liked coming to SoWal.

Ditto, however I won't be one of the fewer people who dislike coming to SoWal.

Oh well...tell him ba-bye!!! have fun in Key west....nobody will miss him :clap_1:

It's impossible to even compare Key West and SoWal. I like both SoWal and Key West, but for entirely different reasons. Key West is a great place if you want to party 24/7, be loud, get drunk, run into a bunch of drunks and strange people who you'll probably never see again (thankfully!), etc., while SoWal is a place to RELAX, enjoy the beautiful white sandy beaches, enjoy the nature walks and bike trails, great food, meet neat people who you'll probably run into again on another trip down to SoWal, etc. SoWal has the best beaches anywhere; Key West beaches absolutely suck....they're the worst, and not even pretty. Duvall Street, Key West's "party street" is dirty, smells like throw-up and you pretty much have to watch where you're walking so you don't trip over the drunks. Nothing like the beauty of walking along 30-A, where you can smell and hear the ocean, exchange smiles and "hello's" with fellow bicyclers and walkers.

Key West has a lot of history...Hemingway, lighthouse, etc.....and the Key Lime Shoppe serves up the yummiest chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick. There are things to do other than party. But my disappointment the first time I visited Key West 14 years ago was how commercialized it was; I expected a tropical paradise, and it was nothing like that. It's definitely an "anything goes" place, and it's fun for a very short duration, but it is certainly not deserving of being compared to the beauty and ambviance of SoWal!

Oh, luvthebeach...I forgot about that chocolate covered key lime pie on a stick!!! Hmmm....wonder if they deliver?

Key West was something fun to see on a short get away for me. I would not buy property there...it never called me back like SoWal.

Key Largo isn't exactly the same as Key West. I was in Key Largo last week and had a couple of beers and some conch chowder at a joint called Snappers. You can't beat a tiki bar overlooking a nice little dock with pelicans and the whole deal. Relaxing and laid back...

There are many places in the "Keys" to have fun. Our first expeience with Key West was approaching an outside bar that seemend perfectly safe until we noticed the bartender and his attendes will all nude  they were all male so my new husband and I got the heck out of there and found another place we royally enjed spending the day. That evening we were out having fun and went up on a topside bar. There were a group of people that graggeed us and said come on join us as we went for a sing along overlooking the street...we were like where are you fun guys from and they replied we are the "Destin Florida Nude Club"..no we did not partake but what a fun group..life is very short. :clap_1:

Today I met a person for the first time in my life who actually was not impressed with SOWAL, he said that he had never visited a place which was as boring as ours! He said that it doesn't get any better than Key West, and so that is where he goes for vacations. I clearly understand that people are entitled to their own opinions, but I have never in my life wanted to knock someone's teeth out as much as I did this guy--it was to the point of argument. I felt my blood boiling as he berated SOWAL. What's not to love about SOWAL, what is so boring? I asked him. The only response I got was that all people can do in SOWAL besides go to the beach, is to pay thousands to go ride bikes along wasted space that we call nature trails for 7 days. I guess some people aren't "impressed" by natural beauty.
Maybe there is nothing to do here but I occasionally have to complain to my wife that we don't need to go everywhere and do everything. It's amazing how busy one can stay in this "do nothing town". For the record the Keys are ok but we love it here.

I absolutely can't stand Key West. Visited once; won't bother again. Maybe it was the bumper sticker that said "Key West is a party town with a tourist problem" that did it for me? That person who you were talking to, bsmart, probably would have the same reaction to my opinion as you did to his!

The bumper sticker that Key West sports now is their slogan "We are all One Human Family." I think people who live and vacation in SoWal could learn a lesson from that. I actually found Key West to be very relaxing, in a completely different way it is here. But I agree that it's "apples and oranges."

I'm glad you said that. We made our first--and only--visit to Key West about three or four years ago. I was really looking forward to it and was so disappointed by the attitude we found down there. The barkeepers were rude, the sales people were indifferent, and the sunset show on the dock was so commercial that it was off-putting.

The whole experience was not what we anticipated. Maybe our experience wasn't unique and a whole lot of other people complained. It certainly sounds like they've cleaned up their act, since you had such a nice honeymoon down there.

I would do the drive again, though. It was spectacularly beautiful from Miami to the Keys.

Don't think I haven't checked that out Sueshore  It's probably a good thing they don't deliver though. I don't even want to think about how many calories are in one of those wonderful bars! I have thought about trying to make them myself though. How difficult can it be? :idontno:

And I agree with Mermaid....the drive between Miami and Key West is always beautiful and interesting!
