My son is entering the 3rd grade at Butler. His birthday is in August so when he was 4 we had a decision to make. Do we make him the youngest kid in Kindergarten this year or the oldest kid next year?
I was for waiting a year. He had speech delay so he was behind where most kindergartners would be starting. And my thought was I don't want him to be the smallest kid in class, smallest in sports all his life- especially with his speech. His mom didn't want to wait. But despite our disagreement I went along with sending him to Butler's PreK Summer Program.
I was blown away. They really took him under their wing recognizing his strengths and weaknesses. They taught him so much. They even had him working with a speech therapist. They were WONDERFUL.
Summer ended and the same week he turned 5 he was officially a Kindergartner. In insight- my son's mom was right all along and I am glad we started him when we did.
And I am grateful for the folks at Butler who did and continue to do such a great job.
My only complaint 3 years later about the school is that I don't agree with the volume and type of homework they assign. I find it unnecessary at such an early age.
As long as you are ok with the inevitable-
your kid will fall down and you will receive a call from the nurse. Your kid will have an accident in his/her pants and you will need to come get them out of the bathroom. Your kid will have some other kid be mean to them once in a while. Your kid will be mean to some other kid once in a while, etc. etc.
Well, then you have nothing to be afraid of!
Cheers, G
