Could have been a transformer blowing-did you lose power? Those things are LOUD when they go and put on quite the light show.

Usually in areas of storms which are likely producing tornadoes, areas where there is rotation in the thunderstorm, the friction of this rotation will cause extreme lightning. This lightning is totally different than your normal thunderstorm lightning and it does resemble a strobe light.
