Plenty of Blueberries growing the wild up in Maine. Yummy. Blueberry Quiche, Blueberry Pie, Blueberry Cobbler, Blueberry Pancakes, just plain old delicious Blueberries. Did I say, "Yummy!?"
You did--and, agreed! Whenever I'd visit, I always set a goal for myself of making sure I ate lobster in some form every day, and I always managed to do it! I love being able to go to a lobster roll stand the same way New Yorkers go to hot dog carts!
Unplugged, one thing we did one year was go to Old Orchard Beach--my friend's family said it was a necessity just for the tacky, carnival experience. But I think it was there where we ate at their favorite pizza place--Pat's. You know it?

Hitchhiking worked well for me. I traveled the state by other people's cars:rolling:. Walking ain't bad either. While I was in Baxter State Park, hitching a ride with some young folks in a Big @ss Cadillac, we were driving on a dirt road (I felt like I was in the Dukes of Hazzard does the north) and we saw a Moose and her little Moose. Those were my first and only sitings of Moose (or is it Meese? :floor:) and even the baby seemed much bigger than the Big @ss Caddy in which we were riding.

SmilingJOe, I emphatically do not recommend hitchhiking as a way of getting around, anywhere, anytime. Never never never. It's not safe. Not even in mostly rural Maine. My brother hitched a ride in Maine while he was a college student and ended up beaten and nearly raped. And this was about 20 years ago, and times certainly haven't gotten more innocent or easy-going in the interim. Cough up the bus fare or carpool, but never, ever, hitchike!!!

Oh, you are just over reacting. Life sometimes involves taking risks and trying new things. All five of the people who gave us lifts that day, were some of the best people I have ever met, except for the trucker who was still pleasant enough.

I picked my first blueberries ever in Maine. I think I was about 10 years old.
August is the perfect time to go!
My son occasionally hitchhikes in France, and I do worry, but usually he is with a buddy. I hitchiked myself 30 years ago. I guess some of us just have to take more chances than others, and hope that we can take care of ourselves if things go amiss.

Young man, I'm going to give you my favorite Mom-ism:

Don't say I didn't warn you!! :nono1:

On another note, there's nothing in the world like a blueberry-picking day in Maine, followed by a lobster dinner in the evening. I can taste it now..

Would you rather I not stop and offer you a lift if I see you walking down the road?:idontno:

I like to think that I am a good judge of people. If a person, who I found to be sketchy IMO, offers a lift, I would probably decline. If a nut case, whom I misjudged, gives me a ride and tries to kill me or beat me, all I have to say is look out. I have no problem disarming someone and killing them in self defense. ;-)

Peapod: the Pat's Pizza I knew of was in Orono - a favorite student hang out near the University of Maine campus. GREAT Pizza. The O.O.B. location may be a franchise store :idontno:
