Mosquito Commissioners Up from 3 to 5?

New posts
I've been learning a lot about integrated pest management recently...there are ways to control pests with minimal use of poison. I do believe insects that transmit diseases should be controlled, but, as with all things, in moderation.

Now I am itching for a gardening thread. Punzy...I would love to hear more about what you have learned...perhaps a thread about pest management?

What I've learned is that every action will have an unintended consequence, and any overkill pest control will likely throw everything out of balance. I think I sort of already knew that, but the more I learn about each generation of pesticides that come out and how each seems to require a new onslaught of specially resistant plants, the more I realize spot treating problems early and with a goal somewhere just short of total eradication is the right way to go.

As for mosquito control, John R went to this week's meeting, and reported back that he was impressed with the board and what they do. I hope he'll post more about what he learned...but I must say I felt reassured after speaking with him.

Invitation

INVITATION

Come, join us in celebrating our 45th Anniversary of the
South Walton Mosquito Control District

Date: May 9, 2009

Time: 10 AM to 2 PM

Location: SWMC Office, 774 North Highway 393, Santa Rosa Beach, FL

Phone: 850-267-2112 (if you need directions)

This will give you the opportunity to meet our staff and have all of your questions answered.

The South Walton Mosquito Control is the first formal form of government in the South Walton founded by the taxpayers on May 26, 1964 to serve South Walton. The quality of life that we enjoy today can be contributed to the efforts of this organization to make this area a healthy place to play and live.

Again, we would like to extend our warmest invitation and invite you to come celebrate our 45th Anniversary.

John J. Magee
Chairman
South Walton Mosquito Control

?Serving South Walton County since 1964?

The last time I attended one of your meetings, our questions were NOT answered, as you cut us short, and our questions could not be asked. Have things suddenly changed?

I haven't seen any change at SWMC, however, do you really want answers, or do you just want to argue? If you really want answers, then do your research, and come up with facts and figures supporting your position.

Recently, I learned that the Mosquito Control District Commissioners would be increasing in number from 3 to 5. It seems odd that in a time of so much budget slashing, we'd be adding Commissioners.

I couldn't find much online to explain the decision beyond this document -- http://www.co.walton.fl.us/administration/CommissionMeetings/januarytwentyseven/e.pdf I can't find anything that addresses the reasoning.

Does anyone else know anything about this? Why it is necessary?

If increasing the board will guarantee positive action, I suppose it is necessary. I'm not sure that it will, however. It may just create a larger stalemate.
