Good job Audie! We're just about to take out our first home equity loan - UGH! The drought last year caused the foundation of our house to crack and insurance doesn't cover it. :(

i feel your pain - our windows in this house were junk, the wind blew all around them, so we bit the bullet and replaced all of them. i hate having basicly 2 house payments hanging over our head, there are much funner things i could spend money on !

That happened to us as well...The foundation was fixed by installing steel pilings under the house. (They drilled till they hit rock) Not a fun way to spend money..

I don't even want to think about it - just makes me want to cry!

Go ahead. I did but it still had to be done. Now I live in fear another part of the hosue will have to have it done as well...I should sell the money pit.

The first sentence is meant to show empathy, but comes off rude....not my intention. I do understand first hand how awful this situation is and did not want to make light of it. Let us know how it turns out.

our house has poured concrete walls in the basement and horrible drainage outside, so we play the water game. i have a crack in the wall in the laundry room that i have plugged with silicone sealer that is gonna have to be professionally fixed. i also am in the process of taking out the stupid little basement windows, where water runs in the window wells. we have terrible luck with water ! i'd sell it, but am way to close to getting it paid for !

Didn't sound rude at all. I knew what you meant. And I do appreciate the empathy. Just out of curiosity, did you have a structural engineer evaluate the situation before you had the repairs done? We've had several estimates and conflicting opinions as to how extensive the damage is. I HATE any kind of large scale home repair like this - I don't want to get ripped off, but I also want to make sure it's fixed properly.

My dad's point of view was just the opposite. He always said that you'd never own anything grand unless you were willing to be in debt, and that's how he rolled. That's how he got his successful businesses, etc. - no family money to rely on. There was never anything I wanted as a child that I didn't get (except a sane mother and my brother being alive), so financially I'd say he was quite successful with that philosophy.

Of course, that was before the days of credit cards with insanely high interest rates.

i took after my dad in this respect, i hate to have debt hanging over my head. i think it comes from him and mom having absolutely nothing when they got married - mom said all their belongings fit into 2 cardboard boxes. my sis and i also got everything we wanted, her more so than me because she was part of the "it" crowd. i just wanted to be left alone. i think i was born 30 years old sometimes ;-)

We had an two contractors, one told us to "bulldoze" the house down as he had never seen anything like it before, so comforting. Then we found an engineering firm that had expertise in this type of work. The had shored up a courthouse in a nearby town, so we decided they were reputable. The company assessed the situation and reduced our anxiety. Told us the original problem started about 40 years ago and the drought just intensified it. Very professional and knowledgeable. Ask around and get a few recommendations if you have not already. The engineering firm really was great and if you lived nearby I would PM you the name. It even came with a transferrable warranty.

In that case, I will definitely get in touch with an engineering firm in the area. Thanks for sharing your experience as well. I do appreciate it!
