What's a good one that you use? Our little dog John is failing, I suspect. Took him to the vet 2 days ago because of his chronic arthritis back pain - which seemed unusally worse the past 2 weeks. The doc. xrayed him and said his heart is enlarged twice the size and he is retaining a lot of fluid around his heart and in his lungs. He's now on lasix, deramaxx for pain and 2 other meds. I asked her pointblank if he is slowly dying, and she hesitated and replied that he's not in congestive heart failure but we really need to keep him as comfortable as possible.

My son keeps asking me if John is dying. I need to do some research on the enlarged heart, fluid retention, what to be expecting, etc.

Thanks for any advice ~

You could try taking him to a second vet and getting another opinion. Can you tell if he's uncomfortable or in pain other than from the arthritis? Also research his meds, not just CHF.

Good luck with him! He's a cutie!

Go to a university that offers a veterinary degree. That's your best hope IMHO. We weren't successful with our Weimaraner a year ago, but they weren't trying to make a bunch of money - they were totally into it for helping her and learning how to help other dogs.

So sad for you. Been there many times, most recently on 1/26/05 when we had to put our Winnie down at Auburn University Vet Clinic. :(

I don't know of one Johnrudy. I am just very concerned for your sweet pup and his family. How old is John? Keep us posted.

So sorry to hear about John. You know I just  his cute little face. He's lucky to have a loving and caring owner like you. I found a few sites but I haven't used them myself. Hope it helps.

Sorry to hear what John is going through. I don't know his age, but senior pet care represents a very large sector of the pet health industry. There are new advances being made all the time to make them more comfortable. Br's recommendation is a good one.

Our oldest Peke developed Cushing's last year, (very common in smaller breeds) and we were lucky enough to have a vet that prescribed an experimental drug that has turned out to be a true miracle 'cure' that enables her to lead a normal life w/ minimum symptoms.

Hang in there...

Thanks to everyone. I will check out all of your suggestions. I am going to call the vet back tomorrow a.m. John gets sooooo stressed when I take him in that I tend to wait. Anyway, he has his meds and seems to feel good at the moment, looks happy.

He's 11 yrs. and I've been told that for a small dog, that's not old. He's always been pretty high-maintenence tho. This pic. of him was taken just about 1 month ago.

Thanks again ~

I will keep you, your family and John in my thoughts and prayers.
