New Disaster Movie Opens in SoWal.
The latest in a series of disaster films, shot here in south Walton by local director Selley opens today at area theatres.
The film is entitled Pu-nami, and centers around the possibility that south Walton may become the victim of a huge wave of sewage and waste, (a Pu-nami). In the film, heavy rains swell coastal lakes which cause septic systems to discharge thousands of gallons of human waste into the ecosystem; when the lakes burst simultaneously, a huge wave of sewage engulfs and destroys all of south Walton.
Local director Selley is know for this over-hyped disaster genre, in which every conceivable calamity befalls the coast.
Her previous films included Condo Inferno! The film bombed. Most viewers commented that Walton County?s strict zoning regulations, which limit buildings to 50? or 4 storys, did not make the premise of being trapped on the top floor of a burning condo all that scary.
A 2004 release, Banner Plane!; featured an aircraft crashing onto a south Walton beach killing thousands of tourists. The film also failed at the box office but was somewhat better received by critics; ?I loved the fact that the plane?s banner was an advertisement for a development company, you couldn?t miss the symbolism of that?.? said area critic David Rawlins.
Industry analysts have noted the difficulty experienced by independent film makers to get their works produced, and distributed. ?Basically, the only independent, local film producers making any money are the porn filmmakers. The best example being 30-gAy Films. Let?s just face it ?there?s a huge market for smut.?
