Not a good idea.

Five years after the Deepwater Horizon disaster, a Louisiana-based company reportedly plans to drill near the site of the well blowout.

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement on April 13 approved LLOG Exploration Offshore LLC’s permit to drill a new well into the Macondo reservoir, according to federal records reviewed by The Associated Press. Harper’s Magazine was first to report the news on May 12, according to the AP.

Sevan Louisiana, a semisubmersible drilling rig owned by Norway-based Sevan Drilling ASA, will drill the well, the AP reports. Drilling is expected to begin by June.

The BP PLC-owned Macondo well blowout in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico occurred on April 20, 2010. The disaster left 11 people dead, and 3.19 million barrels of oil were discharged into the Gulf, according to the court findings for phase two of the Deepwater trial, which determined how much oil was released for purposes of calculating Clean Water Act penalties.

Although the legal wrangling over the 2010 tragedy is ongoing, the business of deepwater oil production has evolved over the past five years, particularly with major regulatory and permitting processing changes.
