New Orleans Along MI Coast to Seagrove

Beach Comber
My family and I are coming through New Orleans to Seagrove next week and are unable to locate highway conditions, specifically across Lake Ponchetrain and along the Mississippi Coast. We lost my grandmother's home on the beach during Katrina and want to go through there for sentimental reasons. I have had trouble with some of the on-line maps being accurate before and am wondering if anyone has been this way or has any advice. I would greatly appreciate any help that is out there. Thanks, Steph

I was part of that way earlier in the year(Feb.). We went across SE LA and the MS coast (not Ponchartrain tho). It was dismal. Just out of Baton Rouge you could start seeing the downed trees, trash, and blue tarped houses. By the time we got to the MS border it was worse. Biloxi and Gulfport are unrecognizable by the shoreline for about a block or so in. There is damage throughout the town up to the Interstate. Also, many street signs are down so unless you are very familiar with the area it's sort of hard to find your way. Many restaurants and stores even up that far north were not open. The worst was the traffic. We have never seen it so bad along I-10 from Lafayette, LA through Mobile. I can only imagine it was construction related. Take this with a grain a salt though because it was several months ago. I can only hope it is somewhat better now. Biloxi and Gulfport were the most heartbreaking places I have ever seen. T.V. can't begin to capture the real picture.

I have a friend from NO that travels back and forth on a regular basis and has never mentioned a problem. I will call and confirm and post on the board.

Hi stephjabo,

I just returned from a trip to New Orleans last weekend.

The roads are fine. No problems at all except a little delay getting across the Pensacola bay bridge because of ongoing construction.

You will, however, see a lot of damage as you drive thru New Orleans on I-10. Pretty shocking really. So many homes still damaged, the scale is quite overwhelming. Be prepared to be a little saddened by what you see.

My grandmother's house was directly on the beach in Biloxi. So, it is a sentimental desire to go. My sister and I tried to get when I flew into Atlanta but were unable to get very far due to gas shortages and so forth. It will be my first time through there since before Katrina. I have been to New Orleans and Biloxi every year since my grandparents retired there. I am very anxious to see the coast because of my family history there.

stephjabo,
I'm so sorry to hear that your grandmother's house was right on the coast. I hope you have a safe trip going to see the area.
