New Yorker is Memphis bound

New posts
thanks y'all--yes, it is Rhodes--wonderful school (drop-dead gorgeous campus) and very nice people. I do feel blessed. My responsibilities will include not only faculty affairs, but also student ones. This will be a challenge!

I have looked on Realtor.com--and there are some simply beautiful houses. But I don't know much about neighborhoods in the city (and we want to live in the city, not the suburbs). We're going to Memphis in a few weeks to house hunt, so I hoped some of the "Memphisites" on this board might be of help.

We're so excited about coming "back south" and many of your "welcomes" are exactly what we have missed up here. We will miss our kids--but son was going to stay in Boston this summer anyway (can't blame him for that) and daughter starts college in early August (she's a very good field hockey player--and we hope she'll make her college Div 3 team). It's going to be weird as "empty nesters"--husband and I are even contemplating a dog (which he never wanted before.)

Our plan now is to get established in Memphis in July, get daughter off to college, and then take a long weekend at Seagrove by ourselves.

You are right about the campus, but we loved the "feel" of the place. Genuinely nice people that value education. The folks I know that live their live on "Mud Island". Good luck!

Welcome back to the south. Memphis is a BIG little town, if that makes sense. You will be getting to Memphis just in time for the humid summer. Have you checked Germantown or Collierville for places to live?

New Yorker, if you will pm me your name and number, I will put you in touch with a Realtor who has been working in Memphis for 30 years. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and is still enthusiastic about real estate. I know many people living in Memphis, and most all of them own or vacation in SoWal.

There may be many cities where you can research properties online, but if you don't have a clue as to which neighborhoods or communities to look, you will not enjoy searching for properties online, especially in Memphis. Memphis has much going on and there is definitely a southern mix of people living there.

CONGRATULATIONS Newyorker!!!!! Time to start a new adventure! :clap_1:
